I’d say Guardians.

Both are just so incredibly generic.

I’ll put it this way,
If I was dressing up as a “guardian”, I’d dress up in cool sci fi ahit.
If I was dressing up as a “commander”, I’d just wear the Vanderbilt mascot uniform

Guardians.
Commanders really isn't THAT bad for a team in DC.

Agreed. It actually really grew on me and was at least unique to American sports.

Well on one hand you have a Dim city guarding criminals and on the other you have a Dim city commandeering freedom and rights from citizens

I was watching the Washington - Tenn game this weekend and the color commentator twice called the Commanders the Redskins, prompting the play by play guy to immediately correct him and for him to apologize. It was like they said the f-word.
Which made me think, how are they going to address past teams when talking about NFL history? Are we going to say the Commanders won the Super Bowl in 1991? Or that Mark Mosely of the Commanders is the only kicker to win MVP? When a team moves to a new city the old city gets to keep that team's players and accomplishments in a way. For example, nobody would say former Tennessee Titan Earl Campbell eventhough he's still part of the current franchise record book. How will nicknames be handled?

Both are equally as terrible

They’re both horrible. I still call them the Indians.
