A 22-year-old woman from Mexico's Tarahumara indigenous community has won a 50km (31 miles) ultramarathon wearing sandals. María Lorena Ramírez defeated 500 other runners from 12 countries in the female category of the Ultra Trail Cerro Rojo in Puebla, in central Mexico. She ran without any professional gear, and her pair of sandals was reportedly made from recycled tyre rubber.

Tarahumara

The book Born to Run mixes between covering this tribe (which runs barefoot or with the aforementioned rubber sandals) extremely long distances, some ultramarathons, and some human anthropology/development science about how we evolved to be nature's most efficient runners. There are still tribesmen in Africa that run after prey until they collapse frome exhaustion.

This will be the movie that garners Jennifer Lopez an oscar.

The book Born to Run

Really cool book.

"Christopher McDougall’s best-selling book “Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen” hit bookstore shelves on May 5, 2009. Its impact on the running world has been considerable. Here’s a quick glance at a few of the ways it influenced the running world and some additional developments that have happened in the past couple of years . . . . McDougall’s 304-page autobiographical account of running almost-barefoot with the Tarahumara Indians of Mexico has sold more than a half million copies worldwide and remained on the New York Times bestseller list for more than four years. Although it contains some hyperbole, the book has earned its keep (and rave reviews) because McDougall’s vivid story-telling, compelling character development and in-depth reporting appeal to everyone from new runners and veteran ultrarunners to non-runners and couch potatoes alike."

Born to Run is one of my favorite books.

31 miles is a drop in the bucket for these people.

She's gonna get plantar fasciitis.

I remember when Mary Decker claimed and cried that Zola Budd running barefoot at the Olympics tripped her.

Decker stepped on Budd's heel, she was a ninny.
