With less than a year to go, the on campus playoff games for 2024 have no TV partner

Yesterday was a massive day for the CFP executive committee. They're currently shopping around the rights for the 2024 playoff and beyond, shockingly still with under a year to go. ESPN is set to air the quarterfinal and beyond games in 2024, but the on campus first round games currently have no tv home They were banking on a big ratings draw and were delivered a dream day with the best pair of games in the history for the playoff format. Suits will be on the phone and in board rooms tomorrow boasting for sure as the committee looks for a big number.

Rumors abound right now that the CFP is looking for an absurd pile of cash for the expanded playoff going forward. I don't have a link for it, but on a recent episode of The Next Round podcast, lead CFB Fox analyst Joel Klatt claimed to have seen the number that the CFP wanted from Fox and that it was "ridiculous". So much so that Fox execs were balking at it. A recent CNBC article December asked anonymous media executives for their best media predictions for 2024. One of the executives offered this ,

quote:

Executive 7: The College Football Playoff won’t get the rights fee increase it wants as ESPN will be the only significant bidder
Other than the NBA, the College Football Playoff may be the next most important rights deal to be renewed next year. The CFP’s current 12-year deal with ESPN expires after the 2025 playoff.

At that time, the college football playoffs will expand from four teams to 12. That may sound enticing as a new live sports behemoth, but this executive guesses that potential bidders Amazon and Apple will balk at the price the CFP wants for the games. ESPN is desperate for live rights as it prepares a direct-to-consumer service and will renew the package, this executive predicts.

It's looking increasingly likely that ESPN will pounce and seize control of the sport away from Fox, CBS, and NBC who have all made a quasi alliance of sorts with their Big 10 deal. Where do you want the sport to go?

As long as CBS doesn't have any games, I don't really care who broadcasts it.

The entire thing should be on campus outside of the national championship game. 3 neutral site rounds. Are they retarded? [Yes]

At the very least, let it be on-campus through the quarterfinals. Part of the benefit of earning a bye should be to have an on-campus playoff game.

The Fiesta Bowl atmosphere looked pathetic. Is there anyone out there that really thinks that is better than Michigan or Ohio State playing a home playoff game in the snow or a team having to go to Tiger Stadium and beat LSU on their home field with a spot in the semifinals on the line?

Put all of the games on network TV like it was before 2010. I’ve always hated the fact that all of the big postseason games are on ESPN now. If Texas vs. USC was televised on ESPN, it wouldn’t have come close to becoming the phenomenon that it was.

Agreed, but for whatever reason, they want NYE/NYD bowls to be the quarterfinals.

The first-round games are like Dec 20/21. That's not the best timing for students.

Talk about pissing off fans and making sure you don’t pick up any casual viewers or interest

Gotta cram the big bowls into it even though it fricks the the fans wallets and doesn’t make much sense to do so.

There’s enough local students at all the football schools that will fill those student sections to capacity, even with all the non-local students having gone back home for the holiday break

Neutral site games blow in college football

Yeah, eventually the quarterfinal bowls are going to look like all the current non-playoff bowls with attendance at 30% capacity. Fans of teams that routinely make the 12 team field aren’t going to be able to travel in big numbers to potentially 3 or 4 rounds of playoff games away from home in the span of a month.

Move the season up a week. 1st round and quarters on campus. Semis at the Rose and Sugar NYD.
