I don’t think it’s that, I think it’s that people seriously can’t fathom that as legendary as their heroes are, they’re still human beings and they aren’t immortal in real life. So it shocks them when those folks check out.

On another board someone was saying that he hoped Sandy Koufax would be around for a long, long time. I pointed out that Koufax turns 89 in December and when you’re 89, you really don’t want to be buying green bananas …

Mays served in the Army, but didn't go to Korea like Ted.

Willie was the reason Ken Griffey Jr, and I, wore number 24! People said he made the game look easy, and he did. One time one of my coaches told me I made it look easy. That was the best compliment I ever got.

I met Mr. Mays at a Rangers old timers game.in the late 80's. I was talking with Johnny Welaj, an old Washington Senator outfielder and Willie came over to talk with him. It was a very cool moment for me.

The Rangers had some great old timers games. Other players I got to talk with at them were Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Brooks Robinson, Hank Aaron and, I'm sure, more, I don't remember.

He and Roberto Clemente were the two best outfielders and all around players I ever watched. Just a kid at the time, but was amazing to watch on black and white TV.

No doubt. I used to go down to a friend's house and watch that one game we got a week on a 12" B&W TV. Seemed like it was always the Yankees or the Dodgers. If we were lucky the Dodgers were playing the Giants or the Pirates.

This is news.

Willie Mays. One of the last true legends of baseball.

Babe Ruth 4th??

Such a lack of baseball lore knowledge is insulting. You leave me no other choice.

Pick up your (unused) spikes, glove and the splinters in your azz and leave the dugout....

Wait. Leave your uniform with Big Pete and get your street clothes on immediately. You're banished from the clubhouse. AND stadium. I'm sending you down to Trenton.

There are many great baseball players but in my lifetime there has only been one legend who was above the rest. The Babe.

Saw him at the first All Star game at the Astrodome. It was his birthday I believe, and he won MVP. Big fan and who didn't try the over the head catch back in the day. RIP Say Hey.

I was at that game, maybe 1967? He scored the only run on a double play. Final score 1-0.
Mickey Mantle went up to pinch hit and got a standing ovation, struck out and got another one.
