Yes you are actually. If you said 20 years ago, you’d be more accurate

This.

The College Football Playoff committee has made it pretty clear they’ll re-invent their criteria as they see fit. They don’t intend on giving any G5 team a fair shot.

The difference is Ruston cares a hell of a lot more than Lafayette. Lafayette thinks they’re entitled, Ruston has pulled up their sleeves and got to work. Because of that, Tech is in CUSA. USL, the worse conference in Division 1A football.

Ruston is LOADED with old money. At one point in time it had the most millionaires per capita in the nation. Davidson has donated millions to Tech.

I've thought this as well. Keep the Power 5 playoff as it is and have the same exact playoff structure for the Group of 5: four teams chosen by a committee and the semis and title game can be bowl games. Then teams like Central Florida, who have ZERO chance at a title as it stands now, have something tangible to shoot for.

honestly the sun belt is equitable to CUSA or even better when it comes to football these days.

Sun Belt revenue per school is actually greater than CUSA now their tv deal was reworked.

Only move worth making for any SBC school would be AAC except for maybe USA simply because playing USM/UAB in football every year would be cool..but still not worth taking a pay cut.

LOL....what a load of shite. Before you start dumping on UL, you should first make sure that your own fan base is not laying out just how bad a shape your own program is in.
Because despite any success the mutts have had in recent years it has not paid off on their bottom line....their revenue for ticket sales, marketing etc has actually decreased, based on the official state budgets.
And apparently attendance and support is so bad that it has led to the inability to pay off recent EZ and PB renovations.......and they are also tapped out as far as student fees are as well.
Hell they paid ~$2 million for their video board in 2009, and apparently that is only half paid off. Any revenue it's generating has been going to the bottom line, trying to keep the whole damn thing afloat.
Again, this is all based on the mutt discussion board.....well, not the part about the state budgets:

quote:

Our problem is lack of money. The student facility enhancement fee is a HUGE factor in our program in that it is used to pay off the bonds that were issued to construct the south end zone facility. The bond payoff annually is about $650,000, 20yr or so to go, which leaves around $500,000 annually of the student fee that has been used to upgrade parking, etc. Thats a pretty hefty amount but we have to keep in mind that the pressbox and suites required a loan from the foundation to the athletic dept for about $11,000,000. That amount was projected to be paid off by suite rentals, etc but that hasnt really materialized so we must refrain from spending the excess student fees holding them basically in escrow to cover the press box expansion. What a complicated web we have woven.

Sounds to me that the web is not really that complicated.

Oh, and how about being the only school that can't afford to hire the 10th coach?

When was this the case?
Not trolling, but I’ve heard the same claim about Lafayette in the past as well

I actually think there is ttruth to that about rustonia......and Lafayette as well. The difference is not in the very wealthy located in both, but the fact that Lafayette has such a large 'comfortable' middle class. Unlike our friends in s. Arky.

.

Lafayette has more money than Ruston ever thought of. Ruston has some heavy hitters but 20,000 population vs 120,000 isn’t even comparable.

And I’m from Ruston and am proud of a Tech has accomplished. Some people just need to take off their red and blue glasses.

For Lafayette at least, I had heard that was the case in the early 80’s durIng that oil boom.
Of course right now, Lafayette is a lot bigger than it was in the 80’s and coming out of (or still in) the worst bust since the 80’s.

Geniunely interested in that claim by Ruston. What are the main industries?
I know Davison is heavily into trucking and timber, but he’s only 1 person

Thanks for your honest post.
And actually, the LFT metro area is now around 650K, the third largest in the state.
I think rustonia is counted in the metro area of Monroe, which is around 250K. And where they support ulm, not ltu.

There’s not that many. Not to overcome the low population numbers.

Tech needs to play annual games in Shreveport at State Fair stadium to cultivate a fan base in Shreveport. There is just too much competition for fans and money in North Louisiana with ULM, Northwestern, Grambling, etc.

It's been done. Shreveport just isn't a sports city. That's been proven time after time. But the folks in Shreveport that are willing to go to a Tech game are willing to make the 60 mile drive to Ruston and after all the money Tech has dumped into their stadium, they're not keen on home games other places.

At one point I thought it'd be a cool idea to have a State Fair Rivalry game, like a mini version of the Red River shootout at the Texas State fair. An annual game between Tech and the Cajuns during the State fair of Louisiana. But like I said, I don't think Tech would want to give up a game in Ruston and the Cajuns wouldn't want to play an annual game in Techs backyard. Plus the fair has had trouble drawing people after incidents of violence.

I disagree. And doing that a couple of times isn’t cultivating. Years of playing there helps in recruiting and building a fan base. Look at Arky. Playing in Little Rock helps build their base.

It’s not an ideal situation, but when you don’t have a competitive fan base, then you do what you have to do to develop it.

And Shreveport has sucked as a athletic town, but Ruston isn’t as supportive as it should be either.

It’s about money and control. As long as Tech plays it’s games in Ruston, then Ruston’s money men will be the big dogs. (No pun). Whenever old man Davison kicks the bucket, I think things will change and Tech will look at expanding its fan base.

There’s just no benefit for the AAC or even the MWC to be apart of that
