Why is Virginia such a shitty offensive team?

I get it, Bennett values defense more, but damn they play offense practically handicapped.

We all love hard nosed grind it out basketball a la John Chaney’s Temple or some of those 2000s Xavier squads but the Bennett family takes it to another level.

They just aren’t talented. They win with culture and effort, but that only goes so far.
The teams a few years ago with Brogdon, Guy, Hunter, Jerome, etc could score, but just played a slower pace. The last few teams at UVA just can’t score, slow or fast.

I prefer the Houston brand of grinding basketball to the Wisconsin run the shot clock out offense

It’s partially intentional.
Out of 362 teams, they are dead last in pace/possessions per game.
It’s not pretty, but this strategy is part of the reason they won their most recent title. Probably also why they were the first 1-seed to lose to a 16-seed. But they take that tradeoff any day.

It’s 100% intentional. UVA is saying “we can make better, high percentage plays with the limited possessions per game” and “defense travels” philosophy.
But you gotta be able to execute offensively and have some dogs to do it.

They are good, but they’re a tough watch as a casual fan. They remind me of those old Wisconsin or Gene Keady Purdue teams.

I’m just now getting into basketball, and this shite is hilarious to me.
Like UCLA right now, they have 1 FG and 3 points in the 2nd half, which is more than halfway over.

This is the difference with UVA this year.
During their title run and surrounding years they were actually a very good offensive team, they just limited possessions. Now they limit possessions and are a bad offensive team because nobody can score.

The key stat to look at are points per possession. I have no idea where UVA is at this year but some of those Dick Bennett coached Wisconsin teams were really good at points per possession. Bo Ryan’s teams were phenomenal at it but they were branded as “boring.” Hell, I’d rather win a boring game than lose an exciting game.
Funny thing is that when Dick Bennett was a DIII coach at Wisconsin-Stevens Point his teams scored points like crazy averaging in the 90’s running the same stuff and they still valued defense. Their points per possession were on par with the good Bennett Wisconsin teams and his son’s UVA and Wazzu teams.

2014-15 Wisconsin still has the highest AdjO KenPom has ever recorded (it's not very close) and scored 1.19 points/possession with one of the 5-6 slowest tempos in the country. Insanely difficult to beat a team like that.
