Hahnville played in 3 5A title games- winning 2, Destrehan won back to back in 07 & 08. WM has been a top program since the mid 90's but people can compete with them, maybe not the same school every year but each year there are teams that can.

Don't forget that Destrehan also played in the 5A title game in 1993 (it's first year in 5A I believe) - losing to WM.

WM is 1-6 vs ECA. WM only win came in 2001, a 38-13 victory.

According to the LHSAA site, WM's enrollment is over 1900. Acadiana was in the 1600's, Barbe, Sulphur, Dutchtown were over 1900, STM had only 1040, Hahnville has 1470, Destrehan 1450, East St. John about 1350. The only listing I found didn't seperate the schools by classes so you have to scroll through the list.

Honestly I think its because they change school zones and district to much...Every year it seems like there is a district shuffle or there is a new high school being built which takes away talent from surrounding schools.

Ex Im from Northshore when I was growing up Covington was pretty good every year and would go to playoff and had talent everywhere. Then they built Fountainbleau and that took away half of Covington High talent and also some talent from Mandeville. When Fountainbleau started to get good in sports especially football they decide to build another High School between Fountainbleau and Mandeville and they took alot of talent away from both schools. Now neither are where they could be if that talent wasn't split. Which is why none of those teams stand out besides St Paul because they recruit.

Im pretty sure this is not just happening on the Northshore with more and more people moving into different areas of Louisiana. Its hard to keep talent constantly coming in unless you recruit kids.

WM's success comes from a few things. Football is a year round commitment. They run a simple offense that they start learning in 6th grade. They have facilities as good as colleges in LA not named LSU. They put their best players on defense while others concentrate on O. They also have a ton of coaches so each kid gets a lot of individual attention.

That being said, there is always someone in the state to challenge them. I wouldnt be surprised at all if they lose next week.

Evangel-20
West Monroe-14
2001
Evangel-34
West Monroe-27
2002
Evangel-35
West Monroe-4
2003
Hahnville-41
West Monroe-35
2004
Evangel-21
West Monroe-20

There used to be a team that owned them.(2A now, SEE ABOVE) I believe all the teams left in the 5A playoffs can give West Monroe all they can handle. IF West Monroe gets past Westgate, they'll be in trouble. STM and Acadiana are loaded, it's a shame they're in the same bracket.

This is not correct. Hahnville beat EVANGEL by that score in the Dome in 2003. Evangel beat West Monroe in the semi-finals 26-15 which was supposedly the "REAL" state championship game because neither Hahnville or Carencro stood a chance again WM or ECA.

Pretty much my point was with the growth in population and new schools being built its impossible to produce a good team year in year out like West Monroe.

Apologize in advance for the length of this post:

I'm a West Monroe lifer and remember many, many lean years. What's changed? Lots. And it's a blueprint other communities can follow because it's not based on athletes and it's not based on having blueblood benefactors.

One coach came in and managed to put together a program; he put the middle schools on the same page as the high school; he installed a functional strength program that was unrivaled at the time; he convinced the mostly rural community to buy-in---that it's high school was worth a sizable investment in participation, sponsorship and tax dollars.

What the community got in return was a high school that was well-rounded in terms of facilities, academics, extra-curricular activities and athletics.

The coaches taught the kids how to win, to expect to win, and to be disciplined on and off the field. But more importantly, they convinced this community that it was doable.

You don't see a bunch of 5-star athletes here. We're never the biggest team or the fastest. But we always have great numbers because little kids now want to be Rebels.

There's one other factor and it's also doable, if your community is willing. Establish a strong youth football program that starts with flag football early and then moves into tackle. Get your parents involved in the process rather than just sitting back taking pot shots.

There's no magic here, just a blueprint.
