The Tropicana is an awful stadium that should just be imploded. When I’ve been, there are usually more fans of the visiting team (Yankees, Red Sox) than Rays fans.

An open roof stadium right on the water would be an attractive place. The other thing I’ll say is living in Orlando, I never hear any marketing for the Rays - ever. No billboards, no radio spots, no ticket specials through my employer.

LOL at the fact the Florida Panthers NHL team (14,620) outdrew the Marlins

While visiting Tampa, we took in a game at the Trop.

ZERO atmosphere outside the stadium, and horridly stale inside. I wouldn't spend my hard earned dollar on tickets either.

has won an AL,a Division and 2 wild cards.

4 playoff appearances in 20 years. The most recent of which was 5 years ago. While they're not total shite this year, they are 12 games out of the division and ~10 games out of the 2nd Wild Card.

You're talking about a franchise with a brief stint of being decent to pretty good, but in 20 years has finished last in the division the same amount of years they finished not last.

The Marlins have finished 4th or worse in their division over 50% of the time.

Saying both teams are always terrible may be hyperbole, but it's more correct than highlighting 6 playoff appearances in 45 seasons.

TV markets. Corperate sponsherships. Those are the two drivers for MLB. Ill also add Loria should be in jail for what he did to the city of Miami. They have been dealing with that physco for years.

They're fully professional with several players on the major league 40 man roster just awaiting an opening on the active 25 man roster.

If I'm Tampa owner, I move to Portland Oregon.
They want to expand two teams as well.

Would MLB work in New Orleans with a retractable roof stadium or is it pretty much impossible to support both NFL and MLB.

I don’t understand “awful stadium”. There is literally not a bad seat in the whole place. Don’t get me wrong we normally sit in the RJ box but, we have sat first and third base line, and all along the outfield wall. A school function for the kids had us in upper deck and no complaints. Top it off, if you don’t like where you sit, go find another spot after a couple innings.

It’s cooler indoor but with nice lighting from the skylight roofing. On a Friday afternoon series in July you need that roof. Living in Orlando I’d imagine you have stood in line for an hour waiting on Splash Mountain and understand that. Also we are the lightning Capital of the world. That many lightning strikes and ballgames would be even harder to finish.

There is not much of a line for anything. Plenty of beer gardens and stands. Bathrooms are big. Clean for ballpark standards. A couple of the bars have outdoor bowling, giant jenga, horseshoes, and all kinds of activities for kids.

I guess my biggest complaint about being a Rays fan other than the W’s, is they boil their hotdogs. What kinda crap is that? I want a grilled dog dang it!

We went and saw Baltimore series last Friday. My family of 5 were late coming into the stadium and in line at the security check. The National Anthem started and everyone pulled their hats off. Everyone in line had their hand over their heart. Some even sang. The security guys realized no one was going to move forward for checks until anthem finished. They put their hands over their hearts as well.

That’s why we like being Rays baseball fans.

Miami has had several issues. Joe Robbie was a terrible place for baseball. Constant rain delays and sweltering heat, and horrible viewing angles made it a bad fan experience. Couple that with the fire sales and constant shite ownership, I can see why. Their current stadium is nice and solves the weather issue, but I'm not sure the location is the best. I think they would do better in Broward county IMO. Plus, this ownership group has completely shite on the team and fricked over the taxpayers to get the stadium. I'm not sure Miami can recover.

I agree with all of this. I love the current stadium. It is awesome, nice, and even has a Clevelander bar in the outfield that is over 21 and a fun place to have drinks. Even took my parents to a game last time they were here.

The location is a problem though. First, South Florida has 3 population centers in Dade, broward, and palm beach counties. The stadium is down at the southern end instead of centrally located. Second, traffic has always been really bad there, but now it is absurd. I work in Brickell, a few miles from the stadium, but damn if it doesn't take me 30-40 minutes to go 5 miles to the stadium at 6pm.

I'd not want to be in those stands in the daytime when they play and it's in the 90's and the humidity is in the 50-70% range. Same with Miami and Tampa

NOLA could only do MLB if we got rid of both the Saints and Pelicans

Marlins averaged 16k in a year they won the WS...that's on the fans no matter how many excuses you wanna throw out and I've heard every one of em.Tampa also had 6 straight winning seasons and still couldn't break 2 million in any of those years.

Bottom line in MLB is that you better have a good TV/Radio deal,Corporate sponsorship,a good stadium deal, fan support amd solid ownership to compete with the big revenue teams. Both Florida teams are lacking in almost all these categlries.WSJ summed it up pretty well

I think Tampa MIGHT have a shot with a new stadium deal
but the Marlins are just not viable.Sorry,I'd move the team to Nashville or maybe Portland if I were the new ownership group.

They fired their manager in May that year, were coming off 5 straight losing seasons, weren't above .500 until July 1, and weren't guaranteed a non-losing season until the last week. Not a whole lot of reasons for fan support.

Teams have to build a fan base and the Marlins have never been good at that.

Yeah. If you have consistently good ownership, the rest will follow. But you can't expect all fan bases to be Cleveland Browns fans. You need to field consistent winners.

C'mon you can't consistently let the fans off the hook...they have to share in SOME of the responsibility
for the attendence.

It's not close to being that simple.Look at the Rockies...they've absolutely KILLED it with the attendence and had a losing record 17 outta their 27 years of existence.Have they had "consistently good ownership"?
