Why is Exit Velocity just now becoming highlighted?

I feel like this year more than ever (MLB & NCAA) it’s being brought to attention.

I feel like interest and reporting on it has been trending up the last few years.
Maybe because the technology to collect this data is improving and becoming more readily available?

LSU has been putting out exit velocity for a few years now

It’s like those sissy sliding mitts- it’s in vogue.

I'd love to see them track bat speed, too.

equipment regulations informed heavily by average exit velocities if i had to guess
same with pitchers' spin rate
getting it wrong can really suppress the game, or on the other end of the spectrum be really dangerous to the players

Exit velocity, angle and distance. I find it very interesting, but I'm a data geek.

It's because the technology to track such things (trackman) has become more prevalent. LSU has had it for quite a while but it's becoming more common everywhere these days so there's more data to put out about it and more people are aware of it.

It’s called VELO - get it right.

I laughed.
My favorite is the 3 minutes it takes for the kid to put on his sliding mitt; the fact they won't steal a base unless its a wild pitch that ends up at the backstop; and they haven't slid headfirst in their lives nor know how to.

Analytics.
The game has become more of a "three-result" type of approach from a hitting standpoint: (1) HR (2) Walk (3) Strike out. "Small ball" and manufacturing runs by stringing together singles is not necessarily the preferred approach. Exit velocity and launch angle are good metrics to determine power and slugging.

I don't have a problem with this. Learning to play with the same equipment you'll be using when older is very helpful.

EV statistic (and many others) have been highlighted and documented by recruiting services for over 10 yrs. Perfect Game has a solid data base of stats but requires a monthly/yearly subscription. MLB has been using it for 7-8 years with their "statcast" feature. "Spin Ratio" (pitchers) is another statistic often talked about and considered real time "analytics". MLB teams use live, in-game data to document the analytics of every pitch thrown. Pitchers struggling can be pulled for a fresh arm.

You quickly realize that not all home runs are created equal. As hard as Judge hits the ball, Stanton's exit velo is off the charts in MLB.
I put these stats right there with Pitcher's fastball speed. It's hard to see why this would hurt anyone's feelings. Besides the snowflake crowd.

You don’t see the towering home runs that barley cleared the wall like you did in the 80’s and 90’s. All the home runs now seem to be line drives.

Big whoop. Da ball comes off da bat at a high rate of speed.
