Lol this. Sliding head first while advancing is almost universally illegal in little league.

My favorite are the message board experts who say "oh man, 105 mph velo is out of the park 99 times out of 100. They were lucky there."

Every hard hit seems to be 100+ with metal bats.

I see age groups that are not even allowed to slide head first wearing them.

I have to admit the constant talk of exit velocity and how much money the players would be making in a few weeks due to the draft got old quick during the CWS.

It’s just another stat for nerds. In a good way. I know a lot of nerdy sports fans that love stats like this. Kind of odd to me, but at least it keeps a group of people interested in a sport I guess.

The NBA has the nerdiest stat fans of them all

Analytics.

The game has become more of a "three-result" type of approach from a hitting standpoint: (1) HR (2) Walk (3) Strike out. "Small ball" and manufacturing runs by stringing together singles is not necessarily the preferred approach. Exit velocity and launch angle are good metrics to determine power and slugging.

thats not why. most singles are hard hit line drives at certain angles. Exit velo in itself is a projection if it will be a hit or not. the data is all there.

why it has become more common is because trackman has become much higher.

as far as strikeouts go, in college if nobody is on base, a hard hit ground ball has same outcome 90+_ of the time as a strikeout. might as well do what you can to hit it hard and give yourself a chance.

in travel everyone slides head first starting at 9 pretty much. for the most part the kids still in little league at 9 are the kids that are not going to play in high school so who cares what they wear, let them have fun and wear what makes them feel good.

the amount of old man at games concerned what a kid is wearing or if he is dancing to have fun etc is laughable.

You think so? I think baseball still clearly takes the cake when it comes to "nerdy" stats.

I listen to mlb stat videos on youtube and I need to look up half the crap they talk about. WRC+, FIP, wth.

NBA fans are so fricking nerdy towards individual players including wingspan, show size, etc. they have the weirdest stats on every single aspect of every single player in the league

Exit velo, launch angle, and spread charts dictate defensive alignments.

If you pay attention to the position players, you begin to see how important a lot of the data is.

Moneyball Athletics started almost all of the stat crunching in sports. It all started with baseball, but now it’s in every sport. Stats add objectivity to talent evaluation and scheme fit much better than eye ball tests. The issue is separating inconsistent stats from sticky stats. Dependent variables from independent variables. Basketball has a lot more dependent variables than independent, so it’s less stat focused. Football is seeing a breakthrough on independent (sticky) stats like on-target percentage for QBs rather than completion percentage
