Why don’t major leaguers hustle through first at full speed?

I realize the fielding percentage is insane in MLB but they make mistakes from time to time and you always see the hitters dragging arse running through first. We teach our kids to run through full speed and then break down, so why won’t major leaguers do it and set a good example?

Because some of these guys are fragile and the injury risk isn’t worth the reward.

Gotta save that energy for after the game. Ask Trevor Bauer

I'm sure when the outcome is known ahead of time for 99.9% of routine outs at 1st on top of the stakes being low during regular season with the possibility for injury going on a full out sprint for what is a moot play for 162 games causes this. I think they do hustle when the game is on the line or it's the playoffs.

Because MLB players get hurt carrying their luggage, getting out of the bath tub, getting massages, riding dirt bikes and flying drones.

Because baseball doesn’t have the athletes nfl and nba do

The same reason they swing 3-0, hardly ever bunt, and catch fly balls with their off hand in their pocket - MLB is simply a different game than rec league.

I can’t recall the last time I saw someone dragging arse and an error was made where they still got out. If the ball is fielded cleanly, they’ll typically reach on a throwing error whether they’re busting arse or taking it easy.

Or freaking out from a spider and going through a glass table. (Which may have been code for “smoked crack and freaked out.”)

Why don’t QB’s lower their shoulder to get an extra yard rather than sliding and giving up?

Not even close to the same. It’s simply running. My son just asked me about it while watching the Astros after seeing 2 batters in a row basically jog. Kids look up to these players.

Pete Rose laughs at how soft today’s players are

162 game season. I'm sure going balls to the wall on every run to first base a lot more likely to cause injury, especially in some of the bigger dudes.

Part of the reason is that professional sports locker rooms in the US have a very anti try hard culture.
Your teammates would probably rip you in the locker room if you sprinted to first every time. NBA players probably rip guys for diving on the court for a loose ball during the regular season.

That’s an interesting take, and probably right due to the money involved. Business decisions are very much a real thing in longer regular season sports.

Well damn, but that’s not exactly the play I had in mind. Nothing particularly routine about that play, and he deserved to get pulled.

You got much bigger issues when it comes to setting an example for the kids when it comes to watching the Astros

Time it next time. When you think someone is coasting. I bet they get to first faster than you realize
