Some of American sports' biggest names--Serena Williams, Jerry West, Terry Bradshaw, David Freese--have suffered severe depression, anguish and despair.

Why? They have the money, the fame, they could afford to pay their utility bills, tuition for their children/family, car payments, they have the best health care coverage.

What's wrong?

Money and fame don't buy happiness. The specific reasons for depression vary person to person.

Sometimes people spend too much in their own head measuring themselves against impossible standards and it drags them down over and over.

Some of the most successful people have some of the most impossible standards for themselves.

Money doesn't buy happiness and/or fulfillment

Also, those types have pressures and temptations that we could not understand

if you're actually asking this question and phrasing it like this, you'll never understand. Sad.

Money can take the stress out of certain things, like paying rent, feeding yourself, etc., But sometimes negative thoughts fill that empty space.

When I had money I was probably the worst version of myself, and I knew it, thus adding to the avalanche of depression.

I don’t really see the correlation you’re trying to make

A ton of people of all walks of life suffer from depression.

I don't get the assertion that money cures all ills.

it pays for everything but your own mental well being.

depression isn't limited to poor folks.

Because it’s not a state of mind but a medical condition.

Forget who I was reading about recently, but the more success they found usually made them more depressed because they didn’t understand how it was not making them happier.

This is a salient thought. Wondering why you're not happy and not being able to solve that puzzle is maddening.

Probably a combination of thinking their feelings are more important than others' while also having a massive platform to bitch.

They have money, fame, often the admiration of millions of fans worldwide...but at the end of the day they’re still just people just like you and I and they deal with some of the same struggles we do.

I can totally see it on retirement. You spend the early part of your life dedicated to your craft that you make a career, but unlike most people, you can't do that through old age (except for golfers). So, you're young, the spotlight is gone somewhat, the money doesn't come as easy, and you have the rest of your life to try to find something to fulfill yourself. That has to be a mindfrick. I find myself thinking a lot, what does a guy like Allen Iverson or Terrell Owens do every day now?

Are you suggesting people with higher IQs don’t deal with depression and the like?

I hope not. As that’d be an awful arse take.

Money buys freedom.

Freedom is the opportunity to be happy.

That’s not to say if you’re poor, you can’t be happy. It’s just harder.

3 things-

A. Yes, money alleviates certain concerns/problems.

B. Money doesn’t preclude someone from being depressed over other problems eg. failed relationships, general anxiety, etc.

C. Money probably brings about other concerns/problems that people without money don’t have
