re: Why do some golfers “lose It” when they are still in their prime?

The two best drivers of the golf ball are Rory and Scottie
Scottie drives it really good, he’s not the second best driver of the ball. Off the top of my head, Ludvig, Cam Young, and while young Luke Clayton drives the shite out of it. Ludvig is a clear two in my opinion, he hits it incredibly straight for how far he hits it

He only has 6 Tour wins, Phil has 57.
Phil underachieved in the majors and still won 6. 57 Tour wins is insane. Winning majors, and multiple is the standard, but what really separates the greats is winning majors and being the best in the world for 2 decades
Gary Player only has 27 tour wins. Hes still one of the greats. If Morikawa can get to 6 or 7 majors he will have at least that many tour wins

So not as good as Phil, which was the whole conversation. Got it

Still one of the greats

With regards to Spieth….
He was always a flash in the pan. He isn’t a great ball striker… he relied on putting and chipping…. Eventually that catches up.

It’s becoming extremely common for the millennial top pros. I think these guys grew up being technical as frick and when they lose something they just tinker like a damn robot scientist and it kills them
Probably some truth in this. You see Scheffler, he def owns that swing

Rory is in his mid 30s and hasn’t won a major in more than a decade. Neither will come close to Phil’s career.
At Rory’s age (35), Phil had 27 PGA Tour wins and 2 major wins. Rory has 27 and 4. Phil won 4 of his 6 majors after the age of 35. I still don’t think Rory will catch Phil in majors but “not coming close” to Phil’s career, eh can’t say I agree with you there

Golf is deeper these days and margins are thin
It’s an incredibly difficult game to master bc there are so many facets to it, different styles of courses, different types of grass to putt and chip on, etc. Throw in tournament pressure, a hectic air travel schedule, and it can wear people down.
There are only a few generational talents in golf and the rest are 1 bad swing or putt away from going into the abyss for a year or longer.

Golf is by far the hardest game to stay dominant at, there isn't anything close. It's such a fickle game with so many different idiosyncrasies so peculiar to each player. Any sort of struggle, if not met with the fierce passion that got you there will lead you to drop off significantly.

Obviously there are many factors that spiral back to each individual...but the Yips are real ??... and recovering from them sometimes results in overcompensation. Outside Life as time goes on making the time/effort virtually impossible to compete and win Tournaments... financial security softens most a smidge too.

How did Jim Furyk have such a long, successful career with that swing?

Homo has completely fell off the map. He should work on his game more and get off social media.

Thing w Rory is how consistent he has been over the last 15 yrs. Like Phil he's been extremely consistent staying in the top 10 for what 15 yrs now.
Multiple close calls recently in the majors, so he may catch Phil but he also plays on the DP Tour so that may hidden the tour wins which i don't think he gets too Phil
Not sure if he catches Phil in majors but may come close.
I think him and Phil is a great comparison on consistently being in the mix for 2 decades.
JT as Rory doesn't mk enough putts to really make a run at those numbers
Golf is so mentally draining which is why you see the burning out. Now players are more physically fit not sure how that translates long term but it's the mental side which is why Tiger was ridiculous.
Imagine Phil not having lapses on the back 9 of majors he'd have what 9-10total
Only golfer whos game improved by getting unlimited arse is Tiger lol. Pussy and family come into play.
Older golfers can also develop yips in putting and chipping at times and courses are getting ridiculously long

Recently we can look at you guys like Jordan Spieth, Ricky Fowler, possibly now Max Homa and Viktor Hovland.
Justin Thomas, too. Personally, both Thomas and Fowler are close friends with Spieth and play a lot of practice rounds with each other. When Jordan did his incredible nosedive after such a great start, it was all psychological. He has spent years now in the wilderness and both Thomas and Fowler have done the same.
I call it the Charles Barkley effect. Never practice with someone who has the yeps. Soon, the brain starts blueprinting the same malfunctions.

In 2015 he was quite literally the best ball striker in the world. Like Scottie level iron play for a year or so

Because he delivered the club from 2 degrees from the inside every single swing

It’s funny how much we underrate Xander too. His name hasn’t been mentioned once in this thread and he just won two majors going against prime Scottie.
His swing is pretty repeatable and he’s a great putter, yet a guy like morikawa gets mentioned before him.

He had like 2 full field Tour wins before last year and he’s 31

He just missed almost 3 months with a back injury

It is the most mental game ever. If you have doubts standing over the ball then you are in trouble. Once those doubts creep in they are hard to fight.
