I always wondered why the academies don't play in a lower division in football (like Harvard). I hate watching them get blown out against major schools and there is no reason for them to play at the highest level. They don't need the money, players are hard to find and they have to change rules for guys to be effective (no 300lber would pass normal BMI tests). They could still come up to play the occasional Notre Dame or some other FBS school. But they would be more effective at the lower divisions and might even have a chance at a championship. I just think they would be better off...

it's not like Army-Navy would be any less of a game if they were FCS or D3 schools

I will say in Navy's defense, they have been pretty solid for a while. No, they won't challenge for the National Title, but they are not a bad team, by any stretch of the imagination

the size thing is bullshite talk these guys still compete and win despite the restrictions just shows how good of athletes and how strong and how hard these guys work, and the academies have 180 and under teams that beat D3 teams.

One of my captains played at the AF academy dude its 6'4 every bit 215 and runs his 5ks in less than 20mins

Lots of these guys are stud players who choose to play at the academies

It is interesting to at least have 3 teams filled with guys with no delusions about going pro playing against the best competition just to see how they do.

2/3 of the FBS (including some teams in the mighty SEC) can't compete consistently with the best teams and have no prayer of ever winning a national championship except via a mighty fluke of epic proportions.

You could say the same thing about Washington State, Ole Miss, Indiana, Baylor....

In the last 10 years Navy has been to 8 Bowl games. While Army's success hasn't been as good as Navy's recently, they do have a few National Championships.

Navy has been good, AFA has had some decent teams, and so it's not like they haven't had success at 1A football.

Yeah, I really don't understand the point of this thread. The entire Sun Belt is worse than Navy or Air Force. Why are they in the FBS? The academies also get 30K+ fans at their games. They deserve to be FBS as much as anyone.
Air Force has won 8 or more games in a season 5 out of the last 10 years, and 7 games twice. They play in a 52,000 seat stadium that is regularly full.
Navy has won 8 or more games 8 times in the last 10 years, and is set to join the Big East. They have 19 players in the College Football HOF.

exactly

In 2010, Navy went 9-3 in the regular season with their worst loss being by 8 points @Air Force. Sure, they played a ton of scrubs, but it's not like they get blown out of every game.

Navy only lost by 4 @Ohio State to start the year in 2009 and finished 10-4 beating Notre Dame, Wake Forest, and Missouri.

In fact, Navy has beaten more "BCS" teams in the last 5 years than Boise State

Navy - 10
Wake Forest - 2010
Notre Dame - 2010
Wake Forest - 2009
Notre Dame - 2009
Missouri - 2009
Rutgers - 2008
Wake Forest - 2008
Duke - 2007
Pitt - 2007
Notre Dame - 2007

Boise State - 7*
UGA - 2011
Arizona State - 2001
VaTech - 2010
Oregon State - 2010
Oregon - 2009
TCU* - 2009
Oregon - 2008

Back in the days before state colleges became football factories

Yep. Same with Ivy League schools. In the late 1800s there were just a hand full of teams in the Northeast. Whoever finished with the best record, something like 6-0 was declared NC by the press.

In those days some teams did not have a coach at all. The 'captain' made the decisions. Even when coaches came on the scene the captain could over rule his decisions. IE, coach says: "Billy go in for Joe on defense". The captain of the defense sees Billy coming onto the field and says "Billy, get back on the bench."

A little over 30 years. I just don't like seeing the academies get beaten up. Navy has been decent, but Notre Dame beat them by 42 last year. I believe if the academies dropped down, they would be national championship contenders every year (instead of hoping to get in a lower level bowl). There is no reason for them to compete on the FBS level. They have restrictions no one else has to deal with and they shouldn't need the money. I don't see how it would be a negative for them. There is no shame in it. I'm proud when they do well and I want them to have more sucess..

by not playing the "game" the way everyone else does they're denying their student athletes a fair playing field... they should move to D3

The same could be said for 60 other teams every year in college football.

They academies have had success and they will continue to have success at the biggest and best level of college football. Why do they "have" to compete for national titles at a lower level when they can hold their own some years at the highest level?

If you only characterize "success" as winning championships then you're sadly mistaken. Success is defined by how you perform. If the academies go out there and leave all they have on the field then that's enough success for me. They work their arse off on and off the field and deserve the respect to play FBS football.
