Why do MLB runners run into outs at 3B?

Situation: Runner at 2B with <2 outs. Grounder hit to SS, in front of the runner. The runner will run to 3B every time. I’ve seen this runner get thrown out at 3B a dozen times this year. It’s rarely close. Our HS coach always told us not to run in that situation unless it goes through the infield. Only run if the ball is behind you. I’m perplexed why MLB runners seemingly have changed strategies with this. I can’t figure it out.

Obviously you and your old travel ball coach know more baw

Depends on the situation, but there are some bad baserunners. If it’s a light dribbler they can probably make it, or they’ve been given a signal to run on contact unless it’s a pop fly.
Adam Duvall cannot run bases, so if it was him i’m not surprised.
It could also be that they are hoping they beat the throw to third and then both runners are safe. I’ve seen this happen a bunch as well.

Bregman did this the other night, on a groundball to 3B, and made it in safely, with no play being made on him.

Any SS from high school on that sees a runner at 2B cross his vision will throw to 3rd. It’s basic baserunning to stay. Baserunning is a lost art. This is one example.

Baseball is dying for obvious reasons.

Those are general rules, sure. But ultimately depends on how hard & where the ball is hit, and what type of lead the runner has.

Yes, how hard the ball is hit is a factor but your lead has nothing to do with it. Anything outside of a slow roller in front of a runner, he will be thrown out at 3rd, unless a major shift is on. Defensive positioning is more important than the size of your lead. But I have seen this screwed up in college and pro baseball a ton over the last few years. Just bad baserunning because it isn't taught at the little kid level anymore. Hard to learn when you are a pro. Travel ball and tons of meaningless innings of daddy have killed this part of baseball.

I don’t know, but Altuve just loves to make the last out at 3rd for some reason

Have seen it a few times where the runner is going before contact, so they are already in motion and basically running into the play. More common on full count situations, but could also be hit & run situations based on the expected pitch for that count

Base running is all about good instincts. Some have them others don’t. Reading the ball off the bat has become a lost art. The shift has fuked it up too

He loves getting picked off even more.

That’s a blatant lie.
