Maryland left for the B1G starting this year, Louisville was their replacement. Fortunately, all the realignment seems to be settling down now.

Because neither are that desirable and the other Texas schools in the Big 12 wouldn't want to pull them on to their tier and have to compete against them.
The real question is why didn't the Big 12 add Louisville? ETA: I see this has been discussed already.
But as of now, I think they should suck it up and add Colorado State and BYU. I realize that BYU isn't a great fit, but what other options are there?

. Regardless they still bring a lot to any conference with other sports like Mens and Womens Basketball and Baseball. Football isn't the only sport schools play.

I was in the room when Tulane's AD unveiled the new stadium design to the Athletics Fund Advisory Board during Homecoming 2011.
It is no coincidence that Cincinnati has expanded its stadium to 40k this year, and that Tulane built an on campus stadium that can expand to 50k seats.
At that time, the Presidents of the Big XII were evaluating a short list of five schools for inclusion to the conference: UL, WVU, TCU, Cincinnati and Tulane. BYU was not being considered for reasons that had to do with policies unique to BYU I beleive.
UL went to the ACC of course, and TCU and WVU were invited to the Big XII.
Tulane was being considered for three main reasons: New Orleans is a desireable TV market,Louisiana is contiguous to Texas, and Tulane is a member of the American Association of Univeristies. This is an invite only accredidation, and is paramount to all univeristy Presidents goals of obtaining or maintaining. It's like being a 'made man' in academia for grants et cetera from foundations and government. Some faculty will only teach at memebr institutions. Nebraska was amemeber when it left as was Mizzou, and those connections lost probably really hurt. the Big XII presidents need AAU members. I think only Texas , Kansas, and Iowa State are currently in it. If you want to join the club you must have relationships with the members, and that is the reality.
I also suspect that Texas and OU look at the New Orleans market for recruiting as a plus.
I have no idea if Tulane and Cincinnati are still on the bubble today, but they were in serious talks in 2011.

and by the way, when Tulane got invited to the Big East(now AAC), the story was broken by a reporter in Austin, TX. That is not a coincidence.

BYU, Colorado St or Cincinnati. Those are the only schools the Big 12 should even consider to try and get back to 12. I do think Big 12 expansion is coming...and coming soon IMO!

Both moves would be bad PR for the conference. I don't think they should add either school right now.
Adding Colorado State is a weird look after watching Colorado walk to the PAC. It makes the Big XII look like the "little brother" conference. With that said, I think Colorado State could get up to Big XII speed rather quickly.
Adding Tulane is a different kind of risk. Remember how Marquette (and 1-2 other Catholic 7 people) went out in public and attacked Tulane? The Green Wave have some unique features to offer the Big XII, but you may need to wait 5-10 years for the stigma to wear off (and for a few programs to improve).
I appreciate how quite a number of SEC fan bases are relatively welcoming to Tulane - but I just don't see it happening. Tulane to Big XII (or Rice to the PAC) are 40-year moves - but unfortunately conferences aren't thinking long-term anymore. Those days are done.

They don't add net revenue.
Right now the pot is split ten ways because there are ten teams. If the Big 12 adds two teams, the pot is split twelve ways. The two incoming teams need to add enough TV $$ and revenue to the pot so that each team can get a bigger piece of the pie.

UCF is a big school in a decent market (Orlando). I could see them adding this team or USF, which is in tampa. Whichever one brings in more TV money.
The other school they could add is Cincinatti. They really missed the boat on Louisville. Woulda been a great addition.

Neither one of those schools added tv $$$$. IDK why they added TCU, but they were atleast coming off of a BCS bowl. Maybe Kansas, ISU, KSU, and Baylor thought that TCU could help secure them an invite into the Big East if the Big 12 had fallen apart back in 2011.

Probably the no-Sunday rule. That causes scheduling headaches. BYU is a solid program with a national following and brings a lot to the table, but I'm not sure a P5 conference is going to think they're worth it. There are other good programs out there with no schedule restrictions.

I think they need to go west. I like the BYU idea a lot. and even CSU to a certain degree. Cincy could be a good addition.
