Why did Colorado leave the Big XII in the first place?

Even at the time it was a lateral move at best and Colorado was a perfect fit for the conference they were already in.
The Big XII was actually better than the PAC in major sports most years. I’m assuming it wasn’t about the money either, they probably weren’t bringing in more revenue in the PAC. It just doesn’t make a lot of sense

Sensed the big 12 was about to collapse with Missouri, Texas AM and Nebraska leaving
Wasn’t a terrible idea at the time
Remember, Texas and Oklahoma were heavily rumored to be joining the pac 12 around this time also.

Thought they were better than those dumb hicks in the big12. Wanted to be apart of the wine and cheesers of the pac12

The PAC was far more attractive than the Big12 at the time. The Big12 was on the verge of collapse and this was before Larry Scott completely bungled the Pac-12 network, effectively killing the conference.
They were also struggling and thought a tighter connection with California would help, as that was their traditional recruiting grounds.

Nothing better than ou Colorado Nebraska games back in the day

IIRC, their athletic department wasn’t making much money and the school admin wanted to be involved with a group of schools with a better academic profile.
Did not help that the way the Big 12 revenue distribution worked was that Texas got the largest slice of the pie and everyone else split the crumbs.

Utah royally screwed themselves in this realignment by pissing off the Big 12. Arizona, Oregon, Washington, & Colorado join the Big 12 all others will be in the MWC.

In Utah’s case, it was a good idea at the time.
The Big 12 appeared to be imploding while the Pac 10 appeared to be set, securing their position in one of the Power Five conferences.
I don’t think many people saw the Big Ten’s expansions getting quite this ambitious, going from requiring states being contiguous to taking fricking UCLA and USC.

Considering what was the revenue share in the MW, and their beef with BYU on every single level of administration, Utah left on the P5 train and never came back
When people think about realignment messes in the early 2010s they’d usually think about the Big XII but the MW was probably at the same level of shite slinging

Big 12 did not split money evenly and the other 10 teams felt Oklahoma and especially Texas got too big of a share.

Ruined the Big 12.
Hope Sankey explains to them that they’re in a big boy league now and ain’t gonna put up with their bullshite.

At the time the PAC-10 was seen as a great upgrade and the Big 12 was collapsing. They almost had Texas, OU, Tech and OSU join which at the time would’ve made them the de facto #3 conference but the Cali schools couldn’t see past their noses and add in Tech/OSU.
Also no one knew Larry Scott was going to run the conference into the ground.
Hubris and absolutely shockingly ineptitude from leadership killed the conference

Well now they’re about to be a mid major league without the big 2

In addition to the other responses, they thought they’d benefit and receive a lot of support from their alumni on the west coast being able to see their games in closer proximity.
That didn’t work though because of how dog shite their teams have been for 15 years

Money is of course always the priority in these affairs, but besides that, the state of Colorado itself has very much rebranded culturally in the last few decades. Now sees itself as extension of the left coast with Denver being another Seattle, Bay Area etc. Probably wanted to get away from the Great Plains and its Big 8 roots to chase the perceived prestige & cosmopolitanism of the left coast offered by the PAC 12.

All this. The conference was on the verge of a collapse. Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma St were close to going to the Pac 10. And the rest of the members were over Texas and their Longhorn Network. Nebraska was out. They saw the writing on the wall. So they bolted.

I will NEVER understand how the Pac 12 failed to capture the amazing advantage of their west coast time zone with putting their games in the afternoon & evening time slots, across the conference, including the late prime time slots.
Enough of the casual football fans in the East Coast & Central would've certainly "fallen asleep"/stayed up for those late night games, especially in the sports bars.
Pac 12 Saturday Night Lights would've really built up the entire conference with revenue.

They just got a really good TV deal, and the money goes up with every P5 team that joins the conference. They're arguably better than they were before because Texas isn't there to frick anything up anymore.
