re: Who's ready for a 28-team playoff in CFB?

The BCS would’ve had Clemson and Alabama has the title in 2018 using a combination of computer and human rankings. ND would have been left out. As you say that’s pretty easy and would’ve caused not THAT much controversy aside from your usual national pundit ND lovers.
2019 is the same answer that us BCS defenders will always give. It ultimately would have given you the right and most deserving champion, teeth gnashing aside. LSU would’ve made the title game and that’s all that mattered as they were going crush whoever they played.
The only two years you can really point to potential travesty is 2004, because it’s before the SEC got the respect it deserved and so Auburn was underrated in human polls. And 2011 when arguably Bama shouldn’t have been given a rematch, which could’ve just been solved with a prohibition on the same conference having both teams in the championship.
Ultimately CFB fans allowed television execs and corporate interests to sell its soul for an expanded playoff because stupid fans were obsessed with a “perfect fair champion” which doesn’t really exist. But gave Fox and Disney the avenue they needed to push this abomination you’re seeing which will end with 80% of major programs making the playoffs every year

For those pining for a return of the BCS how to do you handle 2018 and 2019? Both seasons had 3 undefeated teams. 2018 most will easily write off Notre Dame. But 2019 who gets left out? The reigning champions were the 3 seed. There is no world where the defending champions go undefeated and get left out that doesn’t cause a massive revolt.
And it should cause a massive revolt.
We got here because undefeated teams kept getting screwed. Need to make the conferences small enough to determine a champion, ban mulligans (win your conference or STFU), and guarantee a spot for undefeateds. That way anyone who doesn't win the natty can be told "you shouldn't have lost to ______".

I wouldn't call it anarchy. There are rules and regulations. I would call it greed, which as I said is the ugly side of capitalism.
There is plenty of “greed” in the NFL and it’s not a shitshow.
You can pay self-interested people involved with the sport and still have a functioning sport. People will always look out for themselves, that is human nature. Structure and rule prevent them from destroying everything, and that’s what’s lacking in CFB.

One part of me says ridiculous, the other part says 2-3 more LSU games a year hell yeah.
The money is going to win out.
CFB and the NFL will expand because they are one of the few draws left on TV.

No one. 12 teams is plenty.

You guys say that the regular season use to matter and one loss ended your season. What about the teams not ranked in the pre-season top 15 who would get hosed every year? That’s what most of you are missing. A lot of different and random schools have had incredible seasons once every 20 years and they had no chance because the pre-season polls biased the entire sport. But you guys NEVER acknowledge that.
Ultimately, your thinking is what has gotten us here. You guys have made access to Natties and high level bowl games a monopoly and the rest of the schools finally have devised a system to break that. Sure, they are doing it for the money, but they know a lot of money has gone untapped because the club was way too exclusive. For us southern folks we have no problem watching the same 6 southern teams play in the big games every year, but the money lost when the rest of the country outside of Ohio and Michigan stop spending is a lot. The expanded playoff will be a huge success as more fanbases will be involved. The southern fan will just have to suck it up.

I never said anything of that nature. A Group Of 5 team has a path to the playoffs now if they handle their business.

How is it done in division 2 or 3?

I frickin hate that the decision makers are hellbent at ruining the sport.

I wanna see them adopt the CBB model. Give us double elimination 4-team regionals, double elimination 2-team super regionals, then a good old fashioned 8 team double elimination tournament followed by a ... you guessed it! A best two outta three series!
Just start it the first week of November and let's go!

Just rant he numbers, and a 28 team football playoff is actually BIGGER than March Madness.
There are 363 D1 basketball teams and 68 of them ultimately get a tournament bid (18.7%)
There are 133 D1-A (FBS) football programs and 28 of them getting a playoff spot is 21%
So yeah, the regular season of college football would feel exactly like college basketball, which the general public barely even watches for 5 months until March rolls around and the tournament is basically the entire f'ing sport.

People don’t watch regular season hoops games because they play 3 games a week and for the first month they play a bunch of nobodies. Something tells me fans will show up for 6 home games a season. If you guys don’t want to attend your teams 6 home games then someone will gladly take your seat.
Now sure, if my team is essentially guaranteed to make the playoffs every year then I certainly wouldn’t travel to regular season away games as I’d save that money for the playoffs but I would still go the home games to see my friends and watch good football.

What these stupid fricks don’t realize we already have this it’s called the regular season. Conference championship games are essentially the first round of playoffs.
I’ve always thought they should do away with the divisions and actually USE the conference title games 1 vs 2 as the defacto first round. Would get the rivalry aspect and thin the field.
Posted on 8/18/25 at 1:56 pm to RLDSC FAN
Why not? Regular season already means diddly shite.
Let's just eliminate the regular season altogether, and just do a tournament with all P5's and mids.

Me: Terrible idea.
Also me: I'll watch every second of the 28 team playoff.
