The true fans are going to turn out for the on campus game day experience. If this helps cut out the rent a wins mid season attendance could rise.

Let’s finish sinking the ship, you lost three or more games this season? Come on in to the playoffs

16 teams is the answer but add an NIT bracket for the next 16. It would still mean more than the old bowl games other than top tier. Drop the rent a win games against non FBS opponents. They are non competitive and potentially a higher injury risk for lower tier student athletes.

The only conference that wants a 4+4+2+2+1 is the Big 10. The SEC would've gotten in 6 teams in 2024 5+11. No one in the SEC would agree to just 4 spots when they can get 6 spots. I heard on college sports radio on XM channel 84 that the ACC and Big 12 are not okay with just 2 spots.
The only conference that wants that model is the Big 10 because they're chicken shite cowards and don't believe they can get 4 in every year. That's the real truth.
It should be 6+4+2+2+1 and an at large as that is the typical yield of team quality by conference. 6 being SEC.

You guys don't get it
This is being pitched by the non SEC, BIG10 schools to protect college football.
This is to entice those 2 so they dont form the super league and poach all the other big schools around the country from the other conferences
It's either this or the super league. Which one would the fans prefer?

I'm going to take a wild guess and bet that you're over 50 years old. This is without a doubt an old man yelling at the sky comment.

Be a mid-tier SEC or Big Ten team.
Lose to all 3 of your major rivals.
Lose to your 1 other quality opponent.
Finish 8-4 with 0 quality wins.
Easily get a playoff spot.
Great sport, extremely exciting stuff.

It’s like a private equity firm owns the majority of college football

The idea is in very early stages. It comes from the Big Ten’s intent of keeping the conferences races meaningful and making November regular season football meaningful across the leagues. Also, it incentivizes strong non-conference games.
How does having more total bids and only 2 at-large bids incentive hard schedules? OSU, USC, and Indiana are already openly saying going from 4 to 12 has incentivized easier scheduling.
Can we also quit pretending that just making the playoff means “meaningful football?” A first round playoff game where everyone already who knows who’s going to win is no more meaningful than a bowl game. I’d argue it’s less meaningful because it ensures these teams like SMU, Boise State, and Indiana end their season in embarrassment.

If that’s the case then I’m scheduling Hawaii, Charlotte, and Weber State for my non conference games. Why risk losing when I could win and get a first round bye

quote:It's ironic that college football used to be a 12-week playoff until the formal playoff format was introduced. Now they want to continue to expand that format until they end up with a 12-week playoff.
Personally I prefer the old way where the regular season was essentially the playoffs.
I'm wondering how long before a 6-6 team makes the playoffs. I'm also wondering if those who hated that a 6-6 team made a bowl game will cheer when a 6-6 team makes the playoffs.

You guys are hilarious. Since we’ve had a real playoff, albeit a small pool of data, the SEC hasn’t even made the Natty game. You can talk all you want about SEC dominance pre-NIL and portal, but since everyone started paying and accepting transfers the SEC has fallen back to the pack and the GOAT ran to retirement now that his bagman system went global.
Seriously, when was the last time that Bama and UGA had as many question marks going into a season? Just 3 years ago, UGA had a defense of NFL 1st rounders and both UGA and Bama had 2-3 studly options at QB. Right now, no one knows if either starting QB at Bama or UGA is legit or not. LSU appears to have the best QB in the SEC and he was 9-4 last year with 12 picks. I’d actually say Pavia is the best returning QB in the SEC.
As for the sport, more playoff teams will mean more fan involvement because more teams will get a t-shirt. So if UGA and Bama fans want to sleepwalk the regular season that’s fine. But you’ll have another 30 fanbases dying to get a playoff spot.

All because the rest of the country lost their minds over the Bama/LSU rematch.

There’s the Big 10 Pettito defender. Was waiting for one of you to show up. 2020 Big 10 doesn’t want to play football because of big bad Covid. 2025 Big 10 wants 30 playoff teams.
