Tyrann Mathieu was the best football player his year. Unfortunately he had a bit of baggage.

Rex G. was incredible during the games I saw him in.

He would have made the race way more interesting and likely won had he repeated his 2011 performance. Still can't believe people thought Manti should have won it over Johnny.

Orlando Pace tOSU
He f'in dominated. They should of renamed the pancake to the Pacecake. There were times where he would flatten a DL, then the LB, and be looking for another.

He’s certainly the only guy that has unquestionably been the best player at his position in college for three consecutive seasons.

It’s not meaningless. Because it’s held as so meaningful, that’s why it’s the most overrated award in American sports. The Heisman gets tons of hype more so then any other award but it’s not the only “Player of the Year” type award. It has 900+ voters a sizable portion of which just vote for the most popular or their favorite guy.
And like many POY awards in football, defensive players or OL have almost little to no chance at winning it. Just another QB award with the occasional RB or maybe even WR.

This is a stupid argument that is always made in hindsight. Jason White was a great player for a dominant Oklahoma offense in 2003. Throwing 40 TDs in a season at that time was unheard of.
Yeah, no. White had a really good season, but led his team to a dogstomping of a loss in the B12 Championship before the trophy was handed out.
I guess you're forgetting Fitz was in the same season right? 92 rec 1692 yds 22 tds on an average team with an average QB. His season was way better, was way more of an outlier, and it bore out after college too. He was so obviously the best player in college, idk how you could live through that season and say otherwise.

He had two off days in 12 and 10 absolutely dominant ones. That 2003 Oklahoma offense was the best in the history of college football through 11 games and that Heisman was locked up before the Kansas State game. Realistically, his Heisman was locked up at halftime of the 77-0 game against A&M.
Also, his backstory of tearing both ACLs in the two preceding years worked in his favor.

Which is funny considering that was the worst A&M team in decades. People always bring up 77-0 but never the fact that A&M beat OU 51-7 in Norman in '97 which still stands as their worst home loss.
Between beating Baylor by 63 points earlier on and ruining OU's national title hopes the previous season, Stoops had an axe to grind. A&M quit that day and could have given up a 100 points. Needless to say i enjoyed watching K-State stomp them later on as well as the only time I have or will root for LSU.

Honey badger
2 things cost him:
1. His mid-season suspension for weed
2. His failure to get into the end zone on his 2nd punt return in the SEC Championship game.
Both those go in his favor, he would have won it in ‘11 !

Probably because many of us on this board are Millennials born in the late-80s/early-90s who weren't paying attention to college football in 1997. Many of us, however, were paying attention in 2003 when Oklahoma took A&M behind the woodshed. And many Alabama fans took great pleasure in that defeat because Franchione was your head coach.

Derrick Thomas had 27 sacks in '88. I doubt that's been done a lot. He finished 10th.

You missed some great football back then.
Schadenfreude is a wonderful thing; and you're welcome, by the way. Hopefully it never comes down to stealing your coach again.

Problem was Bama went 4-3 in the SEC that year...need to be on a better team. Thomas was a beast though.
