quote:Played for the Mavs during the 2003-2004 season. Was a big SEC Football fan. When he found out I was going to four or five LSU games a year, he talked about wanting to go to an LSU game. If he had come back to Dallas the next season, I think I could have gotten him to Tigers Stadium. I would have told him I'd get the tickets. Maybe he would spring for a private jet.
Antoine Walker
I always had to wait for Dirk and Nash to get quotes about the game. I'd talk to Marquis Daniels a lot while I was waiting for them. He was a rookie that had a great year for a undrafted free agent, but didn't play a lot of minutes that year. He was an Auburn guy so I talked football with him too. He reminded me of a guy I went to high school with.
One night I mentioned that while they were on a road trip, I was going to cover an NCAA Regional at the AAC. A kid from his high school was playing for NC State and they were playing at the Dallas Regional. Marquis asked me to go tell him he wished him good luck, he was sorry he couldn't be there to see him, and to ball out! I found the kid before they played their 1st game. I told him I covered the Mavs & knew Marquis. Then I told him what Marquis said. He turned away from me and said to his teammates, "Marquis Daniels asked him to tell me hi."
"And to tell us 'good luck, and to ball out."
I've mentioned how most of the SEC guys in the NBA are huge college football fans. Stromile Swift and Brandon Bass were the only LSU players that I got to know, but I talked SEC Football with Robert Horry a few times too. I always thought they all treated me the same way they would a fan from their college. The guys I mentioned all were nice every time I was around them.
The only SEC guy I was around, but never got to know was Erick Dampier. He hated talking to the media. They'd have to make him talk to us. It felt like the only times I had to talk to him was to ask about something bad he did, so that didn't help. His locker was in a corner, where there was an exit the media didn't use. He would slip out. He barely talked to his teammates. I can't say he's a bad person because he didn't like talking to the media. I just never got to know him.

Rickie Fowler, worked at the Zurich and had him for a round. He and his old caddie Joe were great. Rickie stayed and signed for every kid that was waiting
Michael Phelps is a d-bag.
Not an athlete, but Jen Hale might be the nicest person I've met in my life.

Dak Prescott, took the time to talk some shite about LSU/MSST and signed some stuff (although MSST gear provided by his godmother)
Genuinely a good person.

Karl Malone used to own the Huddle House in Farmerville, and I'd see him occasionally when I came in there. He'd be clearing tables, say hello, ask you what you wanted to drink. Gave off no air of pretention.
Interviewed Bobby Hebert the year after he won a USFL title. We were doing the game on the university radio station, and he was visiting the NSU coaches right next door. We asked him to come over to our booth, and he BS'd with us for most of a quarter.
He didn't have to do it, but he was very cool to some college guys trying to do our radio thing.

Hacksaw Jim Duggan was an awesome guy, too. Known as one of the good dudes in Pro Wrestling for a reason.
Story about Hacksaw. I was drunk in a crowded bar one night and someone bumped into me and spilled my drink. Stupid me turns and says hey watch what you are doing and it was Hacksaw. He stomped after me for 10 minutes. I thought he was going to kill me.

January I believe ‘86 15 y/o me is in Hawaii and just so happens it is Pro Bowl week and staying at same place as all the players. Nicest I met was Jackie Slater, my brother and I sat with him and his family in an ice cream parlor for an hour chatting. No one was an a-hole but some weren’t interested in being bothered. Remember meeting all of these and I’m sure there were others
Jackie Slater
Walter Payton
Marcus Allen
Lawrence Taylor
Carl Banks (think is his name the other NYG LB)
Ronnie Lott

Michael Clayton
Michael Lewis
Both of these guys were above and beyond nice. Really enjoyed meeting Michael Clayton. Jameis Winston very outgoing and engaging with fans as well.
Encountered Joe Horn briefly as a kid at a Saints training camp practice and he was basically an egotistic arse.

Shane Lechler.
Nice guy, really good youth/travel softball coach. Helped my kid out with bunting one day when we were at the batting cage next to him and his daughter. Spent time giving her technical pointers that I had no real clue about.
Also, Olympic medalist and former American high jump record holder Hollis Conway was a student athlete advisor to me in college and is one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet in your lifetime.
That’s all I’ve got. I’m not one of those types that goes up to pro athletes if I see one (If I can even recognize them) in public.

Not really a pro athlete when he was famous but I have a story about some WWE guys in the late 90s.
I worked at elmwood fitness center in late HS early college around 99-01. There was like a Monday night raw or something and the wrestlers were all working out. There was a special needs guy named James who worked in housekeeping who was the biggest wrestling fan around. He’d just yell out stone cold, the rock, Dx catchphrases all day.
I was walking through the locker room and saw he had stopped working. He just started yelling “if ya smellll” and such. I turned around and the Rock was getting ready to workout.
He came over to James and legitimately shot the shite with him for 15 mins or so doing all of his stuff, going back and forth with James, talking shite, etc. He even went and bought a disposable camera and took some pictures with him and gave it to him.
This was all in front of maybe a dozen people or so as there were no camera phones back then. Always thought it was really cool as James would talk about it years later. Dude legit brought so much joy to that kid just because he wanted to.

Dale Earnhardt, Jr and Sr.and Bobby Labonte were all very nice and accommodating.
Joe Nemechek was a dick.
And second-hand, my stepbrother installed Sid Crosby's security system early in his career and he was great. Even gave him a signed rookie card. Sid is one of the best there is on and off the ice.
