I think it's obvious that the NCAA wants UConn, UNC, and Duke to win their respective regions. They're all top-tier programs with 5+ national titles to their name, and if the NCAA loves anything, it's the rich getting richer.

But what about the Midwest? We have Purdue vs. Gonzaga and Tennessee vs. Creighton. None of them have ever won a national title. Only Gonzaga has made a Final Four recently; Purdue last made it in 1980, and Tennessee & Creighton have never made it that far.

My initial hunch is Gonzaga. They're probably the biggest "name" of the four, but they're also a mid-major so the NCAA might have some reservation about them breaking into the club. Still, if they wanted a Midwest region team to win their first title, I imagine they'd pick Gonzaga.

Purdue, because of Edey. Also trying to do what UVA did and win the title a year after being bounced by a 16 seed.

What are you talking about? Gonzaga has been to two of the last six national title games.

I should've been more specific. What I mean is them winning their first title.

If they get to the title game and get worked by UConn, it won't be because the NCAA hates them. Just like their losses to UNC and (especially) Baylor, it would be because they ran up against a better team who was an awful matchup athletically for them. Baylor made them look like they were running in mud in the 2021 title game.

UConn beat them by damn near 30 in the Elite Eight last year.

You're correct. Gonzaga wouldn't have gotten bailed out against Samford like Kansas was. Also, the NCAA was probably going ballistic behind closed doors when Oakland upset Kentucky.

Making another Sweet 16 is a success for this Gonzaga team. This is their least talented team in at least 10 years.

Then why did they load up UConn's region?

2024 NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 - Minimum KenPom Win Probability in the last 10 min of regulation (and OT if applicable):

Most dominant teams:
1 Purdue
1 UConn

3 Illinois
5 Gonzaga

Least dominant teams:
4 Alabama
2 Marquette
11 NC State
3 Creighton

Here is how each Purdue and UConn stack up with all past Sweet 16 teams with a cumulative minimum win probability (in last 10 min) greater than 99.0%, dating back to 2011:

2011 Ohio State 100.0% - Lost in S16 to Kentucky
2024 Purdue 99.9% - TBD
2018 Villanova 99.9% - Won Title
2018 Duke 99.7% - Lost in E8 to Kansas
2024 UConn 99.7% - TBD
2016 Villanova 99.5% - Won Title
2013 Louisville 99.4% - Won Title
2012 Kentucky 99.4% - Won Title

4 of the previous 6 went on to win the title.

Good hunch.

Gotta give the West Coast tv ratings with all the UConns, Dukes, UNC, Creighton, etc. Nobody likes dominant regionalism (except some die-hard SEC ranters)...it hurts the sport and kills viewership as a big nation. Newsflash, nobody who grew up in California was rooting for Alabama at the Rose Bowl. That brand don't travel to most parts west of the Mississippi.

No taxation without representation. TV would love the NW to be represented. Plus Gonzaga is a known brand that went from nobody to somebody to someone who can't get over the hump.

As long as LSU is not the one, I am fine with any other team.

Why in the hell would they want that?

Seems like the least appetizing title game to me. Edey is not polarizing enough for that. The majority don’t really love him or hate him.
