One of UVA/VT/Maryland should rise up and dominate recruiting in that region they could be a force
VT is practically in Tennessee. It is a long arse way from DC, especially in the winter when you have to go over the mountains to get there. Charlottesville is a nice town, but it's also kind of hard to get to from the DC area. And UVA's culture is like Ole Miss, which is not condusive to building a powerhouse. The Virginia schools can recruit DC from the exposure, but it's harder to go into Maryland and nigh on impossible to go into Pennsylvania, which is wide open right now or the poaching.
And the idea of selling games against Michigan, Ohio St, and to a lesser extent Michigan St and Penn St over trips to NC State and Clemson isn't that hard. And remember, the ACC designated Pitt and BC as Maryland's permanent rivals. And I'm not cherry picking their road games, those are the teams in Maryland's division. Of course travelling to the Midwest in this scenario is more attractive. It gets cold in Maryland, those kids aren't as afraid of a game in Michigan or Illinois as a kid from Texas.
Maryland won't wake up because their coach is a ninny. But this is the perfect time for them to build the program. This is their window. They will likely miss it.

yup about 5 hours, Penn State,UVA, WVU and ODU are closer. It always cracks me up when tards wanting VT in the SEC says it gives them the DC market

What was Maryland's record against Joe Paterno, I remember it being so bad that it was almost unbelieveable.

What about Pitt? With psu in the tank this might be their opportunity. They've had some great players and plenty of in state talent every year has to go somewhere.
Seems like when there are 2 big programs near each other, one has to be bad for the other to be really good. This is why I always pull for auburn and bama to beat each other up equally. And I think this is why most people are saying tex a&m. Because if UT doesn't pull it together soon they are going to become the better football option in a very fertile state.

no but hell no, Pitt is a basketball school now they athletic department and the fans basically have shown they don't take football serious anymore. Not trying to be a homer but the school prime to step up with Penn State down is WVU.

1-34-1 all-time vs. PSU. Lost 3 games in a row in the 80s by a combined 5 points.

Huh? UVA is a two hour straight shot down 29 from DC.
Agreed with the Ole Miss culture thing.

Maryland
North Carolina
UCLA
Edit: A single major program in MS would be a killer.

Can't believe no one has said Nebraska yet. Yeah, they're getting 9 wins a season, but that is low by Nebraska standards.

Nebraska is a top 10 program with 5 AP/Coaches titles. That's not a "sleeping giant."

Who got the wheels churning that made Nebraska a national program? Did they use to have good teams with in-state talent that go them to the national prominence to recruit out-of state? I never understood the appeal for a big time recruit to go to Nebraska....

Regardless of what you think about Franklin, Vanderbilt is not a sleeping giant.

I never really understood how Illinois couldn't get their act together. They have access to multiple major metropolitan areas and in a state w/ solid high school football traditions.
Obviously administration and funding play a huge roll. Maybe being in Champagne doesn't help?

Why would a BTR go to Oklahoma?
According to legend, in the Bud Wilkerson 47-consecutive-wins '50s the OK campus had the "Million Dollar Walk" from the athletic dorm to the stadium, where boosters would give star players envelopes of cash

I think Washington has the same potential but I don't think Sarkisian is the guy to make it happen. But they really have a lot going for them. If you want to see some blood boil, watch for Chip Kelly to UDub in a few years

quote:Kinda like when you missed your shot in the 80s? I mean come on, USC has never been that great until now and FSU was only really good throughout the '90s. Seems like if y'all were a sleeping giant, y'all would've woken up by now.
Clemson - I think we missed our shot with South Carolina and FSU being down (Carolina is now up and FSU "seems" to be on the rise although they still have Jimbo) to really take the next step, but I still think we can get there. If Dabo continues to recruit the way he's been doing, Morris stays for a few more years and when he does Dabo picks a suitable replacement I could see Clemson being sort of the Oregon of the East.
