I've actually noticed this a lot. A lot of baseball teams are filled with small kids who later don't play when in high school. Whereas the big kids are playing other sports. At some point you wonder if the "travel ball" era will actually limit the number of boys growing up playing baseball.

We do it because our sons are fricking bad arse and dont want to be on a team with some loser kids who have never played a sport in their life.
Marucci Cat X and DeMarini bats are aplenty and any kid that isnt rolling around an enormous Boombah bag full of baseball gear just isnt going to cut it.
WIN WIN WIN is how we roll.
Yours Truly,
the parents of Braxxtyn and Brekken

You spend more money on it than you would just saving up and sending your kid to community college for a couple of years. I did it a long time.
You are forced to do it now. From 8 to 13 the baseball rec leagues are not competitive. I know I was just adding to the problem but that’s how it was. I never thought I was working him into a scholarship, but just playing with people you could count on to just show up to play was what we were getting into with rec.
And for girl soccer rec was not an option after 11.

A city the size of BR, Nola, Lafayette should have zero need to travel for “good competition”. Northshore as well. Maybe some of small towns need to travel 20-30 miles at most. Its BS and its a scam by people trying to make money.
I truly don't understand why people in the LC area think they need to travel outside of Calcasieu Parish until high school. We're the best area in the state and one of the best areas in the entire nation, but you'd think these kids would never play "real competition" if they didn't do travel/tourney ball

It already does. Money and not being a pro at 8 years old pushed lots of kids out. We played at playground and when we hit puberty we moved on to school ball. Some of best players in school ball were kids that developed late.

What if there was a way to assemble a good crew of parents and kids that you want to be around, cull the crazies, be as competitive as you want and set your own schedule in your local area. This is what travel ball is to me.

The vast majority of teams don't travel much outside of their geographical area. No need to for the reasons you listed. A more accurate name for these teams is Tournament Ball. There were some players a while back from Lake Charles (Jordan twins, Trey Quinn, Kennon Fontenot, and Gunner Leger) who played on the South Lake Charles Little League team, but also played on a true travel team known as the Thibodaux Terror. That team won tournaments all over the place. They were amazing to watch. All very good players at Barbe, a high school powerhouse with an amazing coach.

It's really no different than other kids' activites such as AAU basketball, cheer, dance, music competitions, etc.
You say this as if those things are also not equally as laughable
Edit- Someone mentioned scholarship money, do the parents not realize that outside of football and basketball "full rides" don't really exist. If Braxtyn is good he'll get 10% at ULL, which means spending $40,000 for a 10% reduction of tuition at ULL.

My kid played “travel ball” from age 11-14. It was better competition than the local rec league, and was based out of that league.
But in reality, it was “tournament ball”. At age 12, we went to a “World Series” in Destin. That was the only time in three years we went more than 75 miles from home to play and on only one other occasion did we get a hotel (a one day tournament 70 miles from home that didn’t end until midnight)
At age 14, more than half of our tournaments were more than 150 miles from home. After a Saturday on the field, at dinner that night, my son told me that this was his last season playing. He now plays golf either with me or some of his high school friends on the weekends now.
That said, a family who was on our team has a younger son still playing. It’s mid May and his 11u team has already played 36 games , with 5 more tournaments on their schedule. That includes a beach trip for a 6 game minimum “World Series”. They’ll end up playing 60-65 games in a 3 1/2 month stretch.

In BR, you can play tournaments without any "travel". I think it is easier to practice during the week then play 3-5 games on the weekends as opposed to league play where you get 1 or 2 games during the week that could have the kids out late on a school night or not be competitive at all.

I remember being convinced to quit school football because I had D1 potential in soccer. Turns out I didn’t live up to that potential.
I still regret quitting football. School sports were much more fun than travel sports where you basically play only in front of your parents.
That said, the players in travel soccer did beat the hell out of guys that just played in the school season. We didn’t start a single player on the school team that didn’t play travel.

25% is the minimum baseball scholarship, and schools can also help with room and board. 11.7 baseball scholarships must be spread out between 27 players, but 25% is the minimum.

Congrats on spending years of your and your kids' lives doing travel ball so they can get a 25% ride to a 2nd/3rd tier state school.
They will one day convince themselves that they enjoyed it.
