Which team that lost in their national championship game late in the fourth quarter or in overtime was better: 2002 Miami or 2005 USC?

Oh boy here we go! Past interference flag round 173 coming right up!

Tough call. USC was lucky against Notre Dame. They also had an epic game with Fresno. I think Miami’s close calls may have been more legitimate, but again…they needed a wide left.
Miami losing McGahee in the title game hurt. I think the PI was correct, and people tend to overlook a couple of missed calls that could have ended things before OT.
USC just acted like they didn’t expect Texas to come back when it was 38-26. I’m not sure why Texas doesn’t get more consideration as one of the best in this era. Vince Young had the same IT factor that Tebow and Burrow had.

Didn't Miami need ref help to squeeze by VaTech?..Turnabout fair play.

That USC team was the greatest offense in CFB history. They brought back everyone and were going for 3 straight, every team on their schedule was gunning for them and nobody could slow them down. They averaged 50 ppg and nobody held them under 34. And it wasn't like 2019 LSU that just caught everyone by surprise/invented a new scheme that noone was prepared to defend, it was the same damn offense from the prior 2 seasons

I put USC 2003 national champs claimers on the same level as Qanon wackos.

If not for bad officiating, Ohio St wins in regulation.

Three straight AP titles, maybe.
I saw LSU win the 2003 BCS title. It was on TV.

Debatable. This is about best team…great offense or not, they dicked around against the Arizona schools and were bailed out a couple of times against ND. Jarrett’s catch on 4th down, that crazy ending.
There’s something to be said about a great team having a tough mentality. Comparatively, USC may have been lacking in that department versus a 2002 Miami or even 2005 Texas.
USC had Texas beat, and I think they thought that too. Pete Carroll did Pete Carroll things and got cute. I still remember Leonard postgame saying they were still the better team. I don’t think Miami overlooked anybody, Ohio State included.

quote:None of those reasons would make their offense “better” than 2019 LSU’s. They also played against objectively inferior opponents all regular season in the pac-10. Also, the only 2005 USC offensive position group you’re taking over 2019 LSU’s is RB. So, no that USC team was definitely not the “greatest offense in CFB history.” Lol

They hung 56 on VT and beat them pretty badly, IIRC

Good question seeing as both lost and neither were as good as their previous year squads. I personally believe if they played on the field, USC had too much offense for that particular Miami defense and Miami no Vince Young to keep up with the Trojans. Youngs legs, and their threat, first kept Texas in the game then won it.

I’ll go USC for a couple reasons-
1. No shame in losing to 05 Texas. The Ohio st team that beat Miami was far inferior to that Texas squad
2. Top 3 offense of all time (along with lsu and 95 Nebraska)
3. Carroll over coker

This is just false. OSU/Miami still has the most future nfl players on one field of any game (since the draft went to current format of 7 rounds). In 2004 OSU had 14 players drafted which was the most ever at the time.
People didn’t respect that OSU team because they won ugly. Then when they beat the crap physically out of Miami it was “bad call” excuses. OSU beat Miami up and dominated the LOS.

Now look at the nfl.

I would go 2005 USC if I had to bet my last dime on it.

This shows how ignorant you are. LSU didn't invent shite. They didn't even change the entire offense. Only thing they did was install the New Orleans Saints passing scheme. Nothing new about it. It had been on film for years and was no secret that copied it from the Saints.
