re: Which players in the NFL HOF wouldn't be there without the Super Bowl victories?

Was Neil O'Donnell before Neil O'Donnell.
He threw that game (pun intended). Fight me. I wasn't alive then but seeing the highlight vids, interviews, etc, ole Earl was the first real BIG game fixer.

Drew Pearson
Doesn't belong in the HOF even with the Super Bowl win.

First 4k yard passer in nfl history.
Hell Man Brian Sipe threw for 4000 yards in 1980, and Neil Lomax threw for 4600 in 1984 and yes he had over 4K through 14 games that year, let's put them in too!
Namath is in because of SB3 and the guarantee and he played in NY, without that those two good early years are not near enough to put him in.

Devonta Freeman forgetting how to block probably cost Matt Ryan a HOF spot.

This is nonsense.
Harris retired as the third leading rusher in NFL history.
He is second all time in postseason touchdowns by a running back.
He rushed for over a thousand yards in the post season.
He was a Super Bowl MVP.
Scored more touchdowns than hall of famers Edgerrin James, Jim Taylor, Tony Dorsett, Curtis Martin, and Eric Dickerson.
The first half of his career the regular season was 14 games long and each conference only had four teams qualify for the playoffs thus making his stat line a bit more impressive than a thousand yard rusher with three more games to do it in a season.

I'll say a coach...Tom Flores.

Dan Marino
um, what?
he doesn't have any Super Bowl wins, so he's not in the discussion.
and he held basically every passing record there was at time he retired.

On another note: are there examples of single plays that have kept players out of the HOF?
-Gary Anderson’s missed kick
kicker is a weird one.
there are only 2 guys that were strictly kickers in the Hall.
Jan Stenerud and Morten Andersen

Vinatieri will likely be the third.

I think that could be said about quite a few.
So if Joe Montana had all his same regular season stats, but never made a Super Bowl, or his SB career, instead of resulting in 11 TD passes and 2 TD runs vs. 0 INTs, and a 4-0 record, but say....an 0-2 record, and 3 TD passes vs. 6 INTs...
Would he be a Hall of Famer still? Would he have been a first ballot inductee?

Considering he was an 8x Pro Bowler, 5x All Pro, 2x MVP, and led the NFL in major passing categories multiple times...I'd say yes he would've been a HOFer still

Aikman played when the NFL allowed defenders to smash the qb.
So did Montana, Elway, Marino, Young, etc. All have Super Bowl victories and much MUCH better stats. Steve Young started 22 less games, has more career passing yards, 67 more touchdowns, 34 less interceptions and he ran the ball like a running back so he got popped more than most QBs.
You take away just one of Aikman's Super Bowls and he's probably not even in.

I don't necessarily disagree, but if the above is correct, then everyone here better be ready to watch Lamar Jackson put on his deserved gold jacket, even if he never makes a SB or goes 0-2 in them.

Roger Craig’s fumble
That's a guy who was possibly the best or one of the two best RBs in the league for a couple seasons.
Multiple time All Pro.
First player to score 3 TDs in a Super Bowl.
First player to achieve 1,000 yards in rushing and receiving in a season.
Two 2,000 yard from scrimmage seasons.
Over 100 total yards in each of his three SBs, with four total TDs.
1988 Offensive Player of the Year
All decade team.
I really feel his total body of work, when you include what he did in the post season and his Super Bowl appearances, should warrant a Hall of Fame induction, especially when you consider someone like Art Monk is in there. Someone who really was never considered "dominant" at his position, and practically disappeared in two of his three SB appearances, and wasn't part of the Redskins 1982 post season run to a SB victory.

That was however after the drastic rules changes in 1978. As someone noted Namath was the first modern NFL Superstar, you can’t tell the history of the NFL without him

He was definitely a superstar, but outside of two years - not as a player and his superstardom had much more to do with things other than his production on the field. That's just the honest truth.

Fair point. I’ve also argued for a long time Matt Snell should have been the MVP of SBIII

Roger Craig was better than Joe Montana
