So was the team they lost to.

That O averaged 38 points a game except when they played Bama.
Their defense forced 30 turnovers. The defense scored 6 TDs, and special teams scored another 3. If you remove just the defensive and special teams TDs, the offense averaged 32 ppg against everyone else not named Alabama, and that was still in large part due to field being in plus position to start drives so often. #2 overall defense in the country, Mathieu averaged 15 yard per punt return. Brad Wing and the punt team were magicians putting the ball inside the 10. Offense was nothing special. Here are some glaring examples:
Oregon - 40 points, 273 yards of offense
West Virginia - 47 points, 366 yards of offense
Georgia - 42 points, 237 yards of offense
Tennessee - 38 points, 383 yards of offense
Ole Miss - 52 points, 353 yards of offense
Auburn - 45 points, 393 yards of offense
LSU only averaged 355 ypg.

How was that 2002 UGA team? 13-1
Posted on 2/10/25 at 6:24 pm to evil cockroach
They had a really good team.
Florida beat them.
Spurrier had their number kind of like Georgia has our number now.

No mention of 05 USC?
Needed a superhuman effort by Vince Young to lose.
And yet, it never should've come to that. Bush was having a bad night, blunders (that stupid lateral attempt when USC was about to run away with the game) and he wasn't even on the field for the deciding play....4th and 2. USC rode LenDale White all second half....and just expected him to convert the 4th down which would have ended the game.
People gave him shite but Matt Leinart was right when he said after the game: "I still think we're the better team". USC lost it as much as Vince Young won it....they gave him the opportunity.

2018 Alabama likely had the most dominant regular season in the history of the Southeastern Conference just based on point differential. It's crazy how explosive that team was:
vs. Louisville (W) 51-14
vs. Arkansas State (W) 57-7
@ Ole Miss (W) 62-7
vs. Texas A&M (W) 45-23
vs. Louisiana (W) 56-14
@ Arkansas (W) 65-31
vs. Missouri (W) 39-10
@ Tennessee (W) 58-21
@ LSU (W) 29-0
vs. Mississippi State (W) 24-0
vs. The Citadel (W) 50-17
vs. Auburn (W) 52-21
And then the wheels began to fall apart starting with the SEC Championship Game. Even then, had Alabama not shite the bed against Clemson in the CFP National Championship Game, they'd be in the conversation as one of the greatest teams in college football history. But alas, that 28-point disaster has completely taken the shine off of what was a very dominant season.

2000 Miami was better than 2002 Miami and would possibly beat everybody on that list
2000 Washington (#3) beat that Miami (#2) team, plus Oregon State (#4) (with Chad Johnson and TJ Houshmanzedah), and Drew Brees’s Purdue (#13) in Rose Bowl. Washington’s only loss was at Oregon (#7) who’s only losses were at Wisconsin (#23, but #5 for game) and at Oregon State (#4).
.
But I’ll take that loaded Miami team.

Gimme '00 Miami. Only loss was by 5 points, on the road, about as goddamn far from Miami as you can get in the lower 48, against a top-3 Washington team. Beat Bobby Bowden's last top-5 FSU team and smoked almost everyone else they played, including the SEC champion Gators in the Sugar Bowl.
'05 USC is a slightly harder sell for me. They get propped up because of the win streak, the talent, and the epic Rose Bowl, but they looked really shaky several times that year. Probably should've lost to ND and were down double digits to inferior ASU and Fresno State before coming back. Their '08 squad was better.
'11 LSU and '18 Bama are harder sells still. Absolutely phenomenal resumes, but they got their butts whooped so badly in those title games that it ruins everything else. '00 Miami and '05/'08 USC probably win titles if one or two things bounce their way, but I can't say the same for those LSU and Bama teams. I don't get the feeling that either of them were NC-worthy after their dogshit performances. Hurts me to say that for LSU because they really deserved better.
Wish I could speak intelligently about some of the older teams that have been mentioned here, but alas I am a young pup of 38.

2000 Oregon State is still the fastest team I've ever seen. Dennis Erickson, just like his Miami teams. 11-1
Only loss was by 3-points to Rose Bowl Champion Washington.
Destroyed #10 Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl worse than Alabama a decade later....Notre Dame didn't even cross the 50 yard line until the 4th quarter. It was worse than the Bama-LSU 2011 rematch.
But it was Oregon State, so they got no love. But man, Dennis Erickson was the portal before the portal. He raided Junior Colleges for an instant turnaround....they frickin' came out of nowhere.

Good choice. Jonathan Smith (MSU HC) was their QB and they had OchoCinco and Housmanzadah on that squad as well.

2000 and 2008 would’ve been great years for the expanded playoff.
Both years had some great teams besides the eventual respective champion.

Yep Lee's game was built even worse to go up against that Bama defense. There were teams that year where Lee was the better qb to play but not Bama as we saw the first game

I honestly think it might have been 2019 Ohio State. That team was super stacked and dominant. Got fricked over hard by the officiating in the Clemson game that prevented them from playing LSU in the National Championship Game.
