Boise peaked the highest. They had the best team in the country in 2010. Their loss at Nevada was one of those massive upsets that nobody wanted to happen, much like 1998 Kansas State and 2011 Oklahoma State’s losses.

Boise. Damn shame they missed the playoff era with their run. Would have liked to see them get their shot.

Would be interesting if they could get on stable footing again. They are solid contenders for the 12th seed this year, along with Memphis, Tulane, and Liberty. App State and UNLV are solid teams too.

Hawaii had a pretty good run under June Jones. Timmy Chang and Colt Brennan were amazing QBs. Made the BCS in 2007.

eta stupid autocorrect.

Would’ve loved to seen a Kellen Moore/Peterson lead Boise team in a 12 team playoff.

Thursday night game against Kapernick, right?

Pretty sure it was right around Thanksgiving. I have memories of watching it at my in-laws place and posting on TD

Best run - Boise
Best single team - 04 Utah, I would have taken that Utah team against any other team in the nation for a title game. By the end of that year they were unstoppable.

BYU won the MNC only 4 years after winning their first bowl game in program history.

One of these teams actually has a national championship and one pretends that it does.

Outside of the old BYU, the correct answer is Boise State. They had a great approach. Get a weird/ profile blue field, play a bunch of games on Thursdays so more people see you, win a bunch of games, and then beat big teams in bowl games.

84 BYU didn’t play a single team who finished ranked but I guess SOS didn’t matter back then.

Marshall had a decent run in the 90's and 2000's

Yes, also after a quick ascent to FBS. I’d have them on my next tier, maybe along with U of H.

But the night they lost to Nevada was pretty epic.

I’ll never forget that game. The kicker shanked 2 if I recall.

I think 2010 TCU is in this discussion

For an overall run, easily boise. However, the single best mid major team was 04 Utah. Also, what ucf did with their winless to undefeated turnaround was insane.

Utah 2004
Louisville 2006
Utah 2008

The Boise run was great but I never got the sense they could touch the pinnacle of the sport and truly challenge the best teams.

Those 3 above were probably the 3 that had all the pieces - talent, coaching, etc - to really get there. 2006 Louisville was a blown 17 point second half lead on the road against a top 15 Rutgers away from playing a good but not great Ohio State team in the title game.

Well that's true...and Washington didn't get the votes because of probation?

Regardless, BYU got the votes, won the MNC....

And have a Heisman Trophy winner and an NFL HOFer, all from that peak period (1982-1992) none of which Boise State has.

Louisville 2006

The Ville was in the Big East which was still a power conference, albeit typically a weaker one. That particular year had some solid teams, though.
