I'm glad this is being discussed. Champ and Greene are 2a and 2b when it comes to all-time great corners. Charles Woodson played at a high level longer, but Champ in his prime was about as great as you can be at that position. You're absolutely right about 2006. It was completely absurd that he didn't win DPOY. Shoot I would have been fine with him getting some MVP votes that year. People also forget Denver was in the playoffs during most of those years, even made it to the AFC title game in 05.

But did he? Bailey played 15 seasons and was a pro bowler for 12 of them.

Champ Bailey was a fricking animal. Better than Sherman better than Revis imo. I would honestly say he’s the 2nd best corner of all time behind sanders. 1st ballot hall of famer who’s somehow forgotten because of the position and team he played for at that time. All time great player who shut down his side of the field.

In my head I always had Champ & Deion flipped. I thought Champ was the better player, but Deion made the splashy plays that would catch your eyes. Then again, it could be my hatred for him because he played for Atl, Dallas & SF; easily my 3 most hated teams Back then, the only way he could have made it worse would have been to go to the Rams after he left Dallas.

Champ tailed off the last few years, Woodson played an additional few years and remained productive until his last season. I'd rank the all time corners:
1. Deion
2. Champ
3. Greene
4. Rod Woodson
5. Charles Woodson

HM: Revis

I kind of touched on this in the Woodson HOF thread, but he is an insane statistical outlier in terms of turnovers and sacks by a DB due to his insane run in Green Bay, mostly.

65 interceptions t-5th All-Time
33 forced fumbles t-19th All-Time
13 non-offensive TDs t-5th All-Time
20 career sacks 9th All-Time by a DB

It's like of you took the best aspects of an all time great ballhawk like Aeneas Williams and mixed it with an all time great in-the-box defender/rusher like Brian Dawkins.

I don't think anyone else really compares in the same way.

He was a perennial All Pro during his prime, named to 2000’s All Decade team, and elected to the HOF in his first year of eligibility.

He was highly regarded at the time. Maybe his legacy has faded since he retired. Probably because he played on a bunch of very average teams.

Washington had started their slide into irrelevancy when he was drafted. Denver was a playoff team when he was first traded, but they soon faded and began cycling through coaches.

which one?

Rod left the Steelers, half a dozen seasons later he wasn't just still playing, he was 1st team all-pro and Super Bowl champ. That was 9 years after he won NFL Defensive Player of the Year.

FYI- Herb Adderley, Champ Bailey, Lem Barney, Mel Blount, Willie Brown, Darrell Green, Mike Haynes, Jimmy Johnson, Dick "Night Train" Lane, Patrick Peterson, Mel Renfro, Darrelle Revis, Deion Sanders, Aeneas Williams, Charles Woodson, and Rod Woodson were the corners named to the NFL 100th year anniversary team

Top five for sure. Deion is the best though no arguing it. That is the only corner on the planet who could man up Jerry one on one. That was Larry vs Magic on the football field.

I agree with you but this:

quote:

Jason Taylor won w/ 13.5 Sacks, 9 Forced Fumbles, 2 INT, 2 TD

is a hell of a stat line

What about mel blount and night train lane. Darrell green rondae barber Peterson. Cant think of anymore. Idk that night train lane played in the era of ints as a stat anyway.

I cannot think of a single player ever on the defensive side of the ball that benefitted more from marketing than Deion did

Now that may be unfair or fair

But its questionable at best if he was as good as some way better cornerbacks that didnt do a full on press tour for their Academy Awards

Charles Woodson immediately comes to mind as a way better peak player than anything Deion ever did. Not even a question.

Exactly. Both Charles & Rod Woodson move to safety the last 4/ 5 years of their careers. Added to their int totals as well. Bailey only played Cornerback.
