Offensive roster sucks. Defensively it is well above average. I'm not saying BK is the cause because there's 0% chance he loses the Marshall game and very likely doesn't lose to Stanford. The roster is flawed, which partially comes from BK not brining in any significant skill players the last 2 years, but also falls more squarely on Reese and Freeman for not maximizing the limited talent.

Do you think BK would be 3-4 right now?

Nah he would be 5-1, maybe 4-2. That Stanford game had the makings of the patented wtf BK loss he seems to get every few years. More than likely though he sticks with the run and pulls it out at the end.

That's just not true Notre Dame has PLENTY of talent. They are far and away more talented than Stanford. From 2018-2022 every single recruiting class they've had was top 15.. 3 of them being top 10. So EASILY top 10 in the nation in terms of talent on the roster.

The way you put it, it makes it seem like Kelly's recruiting was the process... However, the stats show that it's the coaching that sucks. And that's not to say the players don't actually suck. They may very well be trash. But that would be because Freeman and crew haven't coached these clearly talented kids up. End of discussion.

Go back and watch the game or some of the highlights. I'm not implying that they don't have talent here and there, and I don't really care what the recruiting rankings say...

Go watch them play against Stanford - or the highlights at least. Physically, they were outmatched and pushed around. Many players look lost and don't play well in space either. Their linebacker, #27, has no business being out there. He'd be lucky to play for the likes of Akron, Miami (OH), Toledo, much less Notre Dame. #57 and #99 were getting mauled and pushed back by Stanford's offensive line as well (maybe some ND fans can chime in on these guys). Notre Dame has good players here and there (Foskey, Mayer, Estime), but I don't think they aren't that good overall - especially in the skill positions on offense.

ETA: Watch their defensive line get pushed back, here

I watched the game with my brother and nephew last night (nephew is a Stanford alum). It was unreal to see such a bad Stanford team physcially dominate and push Notre Dame around.

Fact of the matter is, other than their edge rusher, who is really good, Notre Dame barely has Power-5 players in their front 7. Some of their linebackers, safeties, and defensive front are astonishingly bad. Stanford reminded me of a mid 90s Nebraska team pushing the likes of Kansas and Baylor around. They were physically outmatched.

Also, their QB looked uncomfortable. That said, his best target is their TE, which tells you the extent of their offensive skill players (they’ve got a pretty good RB too).

ETA: Looking at their remaining schedule, I see two wins - UNLV and Navy.

so how did BK have them playing so well the last couple of years?

My dad is a big ND fan and I just had this conversation with him. I also thought "how could the cupboard be bare, this team was winning the last few years". Apparently they are. Hit hard by graduation and guys leaving. QB getting hurt early has hurt too.

I was like, yeah, but freaking Stanford is terrible.

I think he’ll end up being a good coach.

He recruits well, his players don’t quit on him. Those two points make up about 80 percent of being a good CFBHC in the 2020’s.

Foremost, I'm not a Notre Dame alum or fan, I'm a LSU guy.

However, are you implying that talent can't be depleted or a roster mismanaged? Look at Jimbo at FSU - his last year he couldn't even muster up 6 wins. Look at Orgeron after 2019.

Just watch some of their games. Offensively, they're atrocious. Notre Dame doesn't have a QB or any WRs. From what I can tell, they've done a good job keeping their offensive line and RBs in good order.

Defensively, they're largely overrated with many guys that wouldn't be playing on a SEC roster.

Just look how the matched up when they played Alabama in the past years. Major, major talent gap.

He'd be 6-0. They were losing 14-10 to OSU late in the 4th quarter.

Marcus Freeman now has 2 top 20 wins on the season, then 2 more wins over teams ranked in the top 20 at the time we played them (Syracuse and BYU are arse though, so not really that impressive anymore). He has a chance to knock of a top 10 USC team in a few weeks.

Shame he shite the bed against Marshal and Stanford, otherwise this team could be staring at the top 10.
