Redskins is okay because you think they did it out of respect.

How can anyone with any knowledge of sports marketing believe that they would name the team out of disrespect to indians, as in "hey let's lead or fans down a trail of tears and put a team out there that doesn't have the capabilities to compete".

What I am saying is that Notre Dame did the same exact thing, and some people (a minority) are upset by it because of the connotation of drunk micks getting in barfights.

You can't have it both ways: you can't have it that the Redskins and Notre Dame named their teams with the same type of intent, but only one should have to change their name.

They're jaundiced Redmen, so it's actually super racist.

This is hardly new. Like so much in our PC culture, it has its roots in the New Left of the 1960s. It's just that in Brave New Obamaworld it's being given an ever bigger platform.

When I was in HS in the '80s I saw a PBS documentary on the depiction of Indians in western movies. The host kept talking about these things called "Native Americans". I'd never heard the term before (in the context of Indians, at least). Now in less than 30 years of indoctrination it's the "correct" usage.

During the Braves-Indians WS there was a CNN Crossfire dedicated to the mascot "controversy". One of the protester guests actually admitted that they didn't really care that much about the names, it was simply a means of getting publicity.

it's not sudden and it's a ridiculously offensive name. It's the one that should have been attacked first, and 10+ years ago, when others were.
The outrage should be at those that strong-armed UL Monroe, Ark State and especially North Dakota into changing their names, while football factories like FSU didn't get the same treatment.

You know. I'm Native American and I'm sick of this nonsense argument.

No one in my rather large extended family cares about the name. Most think the outrage is stupid and fake and done for purely political reasons.

I'm tired of my heritage being shoplifted for the purpose of scoring political points. Leave us and the teams alone.

By the way, go Braves.

By the way, I would be offended by the following:

Indian Givers
Savages
Dirt-Worshiper
Any variation on the N-word

Also you may not know that the term "Apple" is used to describe those that are Native on the Outside and White on the inside. It's offensive. Are we attacking iDevices now?

No its very relevant. Especially to me.

Like I said, I'm more offended by the faux-outrage than the name. Does my offending not matter because it's not the cause-du-jour?

Syracuse is a Protestant school. Orangemen was a tribute to that. I don't know why they changed to Orange. Maybe because of the connotations of the name being associated with all the domestic terrorism and murder in Northern Ireland.

Some of this "faux outrage" is over rich white people telling people of color to shut up and get over it.

But keep going. You guys acting like spoiled assholes when you don't even have a dog in the fight is converting more people to the other side day by day.

You need to change your approach if they want to keep it. If you'd just say "look--i get that name bothers some of you but it's part of sports tradition and we'd like to keep it" instead of saying "WTF is wrong with you idiots? You must be a bunch of fa**ot Liberals," you might stand a better chance of winning in the long run.

I just don't understand the whole "I'm Native American and it doesn't offend me so it shouldn't offend other Native Americans" sentiment. The fact is that the name does offend Native Americans and the name appears to be racist. I say change it. It doesn't have to offend all Native Americans to be considered offensive.

Sadly true. All 15 Native Americans are offended on various levels I'm sure, but only recently did the idiotic media/politicians decide to get involved. All race issues seem to be the hot topic to date, so everyone is trying to cash in and look high and mighty on this "new" topic.

I don't know why people think this is a new issue. They've been trying to change the name for years.
