Right now Ed Orgeron is looking a helluva lot better than aTm’s most recent head coaching hire.

Auburn Alabama was a regional rivalry until last decade basically

You're an idiot.

No he's right.

I mean nobody, nobody watched this game outside the South until the SEC blew up the last decade.

ESPN maybe would show it late at night on the West Coast on ESPN2...but the 80's - never saw this game on TV on the West Coast like you'd always see the Michigan - Ohio State game.

People in the South have a real jaded view of how reasonate some of their football programs are to the 70% of the country.

This rivalry just was televised locally until 25 years ago. I never saw the Iron Bowl on the WC in the 80's. You couldn't get it.

ESPN helped in the 90's by televising SEC games to the West Coast.

The Game was televised nationally for 50 years - same with USC-ND.

Each game is equally important to each to each fan base for different reasons. For Alabama and Auburn it’s instate bragging rights and it has national implications.

For Ohio State and Michigan it’s an extension of an old feud between states and equal hatred between the schools. It also has national implications although recently it’s more one sided.

I don’t get the Alabama and Auburn rivalry because I don’t live it. They also don’t fully get ours for the same reason. It’s good enough for me to know that living with a loss to Michigan is something I’m not comfortable with and it’s the only loss that lasts.

BTW, it’s been 2190 days since Michigan last beat Ohio State. It’s also 9:32 and Michigan still sucks.

This x1000.

Even being a life-long Michigan fan, this is my favorite post in this thread. It captures the rivalry exactly as I know and live it. As painful as the last part of the post is, it made me smile. I read VABuckeye's post out loud to Mrs. Wrench [tOSU fan], and after I said, "It's also 9:32..." she said, "and Michigan still sucks."

That's just how it works. Even though my Wolverines will lose by no less than 20 points Saturday, I can't wait to watch.
The hatred between the fans, teams, and the schools is both infuriating and enjoyable. The Game feels like a holiday.

Funny I don’t know anyone that cares about OSU Mich any more than any other big college football game.

It’s a blood war vs. a neighbor dispute. Pretty easy to know which runs deeper

I've seen the Nielsen ratings for the last couple of years becaues you can't go back to the 60's, 70's or 80's where USC-ND would dwarf all ratings and Ohio State - Michigan would be right behind.

Composite

But you can look at Nielsen ratings now and ad up the last 15 years - even when the SEC was dominating and Auburn was strong from 2004 on and Bama came back and started winning Nattys,

It's still like Bama-Auburn is 4.8

Michigan Ohio State is like 8.5

And USC-ND is like 8.9

If you add up the last 25 years...Some years are low but Auburn and Bama have to be relevant like now to get the ratings.

80's was late night ESPN late night repay games...and you got highlights in a recap.

Alabama - Auburn was like George Michael Sports Machine if you lived out of the South.

You were like "oh, what's this?, a highlight?"

And you got the Iron Bowl from George Michael in the 80's in a 30 second highlight reel. That was the entire game.

You got "The Game" nationally on ABC. Live.

This game rated above 8.5 once in the last five years.

Same applies for OSU-Michigan. At least for the completely fabricated numbers you’re talking about.

I think it's silly to ask in general what are the best rivalries in what ever sport. To the fans of those teams it's the biggest rivalry. Every year the game means something different. This year the Bama vs. Auburn game means more like the Miami vs. Notre Dame game meant something more. Some years the Notre Dame vs. USC will mean something or Ohio State vs. Michigan. They're all great rivalries to the fans and people at those schools. Silly to compare them IMHO.

Great post

Confirmation of what I assumed

My family was huge CFB fans too. Grew up in Cali and Ohio. Do not recall the Iron Bowl. Early 90s

If you ask 100 people these questions

What is "The Game"

What is "The Iron Bowl"

Which one would they get correct more often?

SportsMediaWatch

2013: Iron Bowl 8.2 CBS, The Game 5.8 ABC

2014: Iron Bowl 7.4 ESPN, The Game 4.9 ABC

2015: Iron Bowl 5.3 CBS, The Game 6.4 ABC

2016: Iron Bowl 4.5 CBS, The Game 9.4 ABC

2017: TBD

Also, "THE" Game is the gayest most unoriginal name out there.
