re: What teams in the 1990s were good, but didn't have a good #1 Wide Receiver?

Shoutout to the Denver Broncos getting it done with Shannon Sharpe (7th Round Pick), Rod Smith (Undrafted), Ed McCaffrey (3rd Round), and Terrell Davis ( 6th Round)

Houston Oilers with Warren Moon threw the ball all over the place with the run and shoot.

1990-91 Giants
Seems when discussions of the best defense of all time happen, constantly hear about the ‘72 Dolphins, ‘70s Steel Curtin, ‘85 Bears, ‘00 Ravens…
That ‘90s Giants team was pretty badass. Two games vs the 49ers high powered offense (especially passing game):
Monday night regular season game that everyone pegged as determining home field for the playoffs, lost 7-3. Held Montana to under 50% completion, only 152 yards. Jerry Rice nearly had his catch in every game streak end at half of what it ended up being, only one catch for 13 yards.
NFC Championship Game at Candlestick, held Montana to under 200 yards passing again, and just like the Monday night game, John Taylor scored the only TD of the entire game. Giants won 15-13 on five FGs.
Back then, Bill Belichick was a master mind on defensive strategy in big games.

I always thought Eric Martin was a helluva player but Carl Smith and the Saints offense in the early 90's was conservative as could be.
Martin was a good player but you could time him with a hour glass.

1990 giants won a super bowl with a horrendous offense
If there were coaches challenges then they wouldn’t have

They don’t fit the purpose of this thread but I want to shout out Jimmy Smith and Keenan McCardell just because.

Bumping this as I woke up with this realization earlier this morning. The 1990s Kansas City Chiefs.
11-5 in '90 with Steve DeBerg at QB; Stephone Page as #1 WR.
10-6 in '91 with Deberg and some combo of JJ Birden, Tim Barnett and Robb Thomas (not THAT Rob Thomas)
10-6 in '92 with Dave Kreig at QB; Willie Davis and Birden as top WRs
11-5 in '93 with Montana; Davis and Birden
9-7 in '94 with the same three characters
13-3 in '95 with Steve Bono at QB; Davis, Lake Dawson and an aging Webster Slaughter as top WRs
9-7 in '96 with Bono and Chris Penn as top WR
13-3 in '97 with Elvin Grbac at QB (continuing the ex-49er QB trend) and an aging but Pro Bowl Andre Rison at WR
7-9 in '98 with Rich Gannon and Grbac; and Rison and a rookie named Tony Gonzalez at TE
During that stretch from '90 through '97, Page in '90 and Rison in '97 were the only players on that team to have 1,000 yards or more receiving. Yet, that early to mid 1990s Chiefs team won 10 or more games six times, making the AFC Championship game once.
That's actually pretty impressive.
