Denver signed Tariq Abdul-Wahad to a $27 million contract in August of 2000. He only played in 24 games in 2000-2001 and 20 games in 2001-2002. They traded him to Dallas after he sustained what ended up being a career ending injury. He only played 18 games total for the Mavs. Four in 2001-2002 and 14 in 2002-2003. He never stepped foot in the locker room after the 14 game season. I think he went back to France.
2000-01 Denver Nuggets NBA $4,500,000
2001-02 Denver Nuggets NBA $5,062,500
2002-03 Dallas Mavericks NBA $5,625,000
2003-04 Dallas Mavericks NBA $6,187,500
2004-05 Dallas Mavericks NBA $6,750,000
2005-06 Dallas Mavericks NBA $3,656,250
2006-07 Dallas Mavericks NBA $1,968,750

Not only did Dallas take him injured they also got Raef LaFrentz in the trade and signed him to a $70 million contract.

I mean, who does it really hurt, then if a player flops? An organization with an unlimited payroll? It doesn’t actually hurt the TEAM
just because it's allowed an unlimited payroll, doesn't mean you can afford it.

These teams don’t have unlimited payrolls. Some of these long deals have crippled franchises for years. That’s why these huge contracts are rare in baseball these days outside of young players that teams are locking up early. The older elite guys these days mostly just get a large AAV on a short term deal.

Nick Foles for the Jacksonville jags got to be up there. He played like 3 games here and got like 49 million guaranteed after the signed.

Jason Heyward for the cubs has to be up there.
$155,000,000 over 7 years.
Had exactly a .700 ops over 7 years with the cubs.
Just an unplayable player eating a roster spot and killing a young teams cash flexibility for 7 fricking years.

Trout. $425m and has only played more than 100 games in a season twice in the six years. Thats nearly $150m paid so far for season ending injuries.

Bobby Bonilla, a former All-Star who last played in 2001, has become the face of the July 1 payday. As part of a deferred salary arrangement, the New York Mets have paid Bonilla a little bit more than $1.19 million ($1,193,248.20 to be exact) on each July 1 since 2011. The annual payments will continue until 2035.Jul 1, 2023

The next NFL quarterback contract.

On the coaching side, Coach O has to be one of them. After winning the national championship, he obviously got a massive pay raise and extension, but its not like any other program or NFL was trying to poach him, or he was going to leave. You negotiated against yourself and ended up having to eat 20 million or whatever.
Was a deal as we got the binder.

John Wall has to be pretty high on the list

$1.19 million annually is pocket change for the Mets. Both now and in the 90’s. I think it’s a great deal for Bonilla and was a low-risk deal for the Mets.
