He's almost a decade away from being in his prime.

OP is stupid.

I can see that. I mean Trout was literally breaking certain sabermetric statistics.

I think it's safe to say jason Heyward hasn't lived up to the Ken Griffey jr expectations that were set when he entered the league. Still an above average player especially on defense.

He's 21.

He's be age appropriate to start in AA next year or be a junior in college.

I think Trout's production has caused a lot of people to speed up their expectations for Harper, even if they don't realize it.

A bad consequence of Trout's greatness at such a young age is now people stupidly think some highly touted prospects should be world beaters before they can legally drink. Trout was an outlier among outliers. Harper is quite the outlier, but Trout, jeez, that dude breaks the scale.

Did you even read my post, dumbass? I asked when should we expect his prime to begin. God I hate this place sometimes.

Clearly, he needs to improve. The question is whether or not he will improve.
What things have you seen from him that would make you wonder or question whether a 21 year old may not improve?

Read your thread title, it says "When is he a bust?"

That doesn't even make sense to word it like that considering how advanced he is for his age.

You may not have come out and said it but your title and first post made it pretty clear that you think he's underachieved so far, and other posters are disagreeing with you on that.

He's had over 1200 ABs and put up a 121 OPS+ at 21, but you're asking when is he a bust because?

Gtfo. Heyward don't belong in this conversation and he only people comparing him to Griffey were bravetards.

Same age as everyone else, mid to late 20s.

The biggest concern going forward is durability. He needs to be able to play 140+ games consistently. If he can manage that, then focus shifts to other numbers.

How good is Heyward's defense? He's listed as #3 in defensive WAR in the league right now--that puts him #1 in total position player WAR in 2014 so far.

On Harper--this is year 3 in the league. His first year as the non-youngest player in the league. He is the 4th-youngest.

So we're making this about fielding now? Because anyone here gives two shits about that. Trout is about to win mvp. What's his def WAR?

Seriously, nobody cares about Heyward.

I'm just curious of the general thought on Heyward's defense after seeing that stat. And if he's actually the best defensive player in baseball (baseball prospectus's FRAA ranks him #1), well, that changes how I think about his career.

Trout's #s are about average.

On the topic of Harper, Trout, Heyward, etc there was an excellent article on Grantland the other day basically saying what was said in this thread- Trout has set the bar unreasonably high.

Revisit this when Harper is 25. The only thing "rough" about his jump to the majors has been trying to stay healthy. When he's been on the field he's been excellent considering his age

Not even close to now, the kid is 21. I don't think its fair to even talk about him being a bust for 2-3 more years minimum.

and he's rich and destined to get richer. he might adopt the JD Drew angle and say "frick you, i'm rich and don't have to bust my arse unless I want to".

btw, I loved watching drew play right field as he is the best defensive right fielder I've ever seen. of course, he was "hurt" half the time.
