re: What is the argument for USC in 2003?

That's all that matters in this discussion.
USC’s claim is worth about as much as UCF’s in 2017.
How can you claim to be national champion of a competition where you weren’t in the championship game all the competitors agreed to in writing before said competition took place?
I vividly remember Keith Jackson whining at the end of the Rose Bowl that the winner of the Sugar Bowl would be the official national champion.

The AP poll is still prestigious. It's still widely used today by all media outlets.

the media uses the media poll and then tells you the media poll is prestigious.

Gaston. Are you ever going to reply to me? People are looking for you...

It's the oldest and most prestigious poll in college football. UCF has no claim because it did not win a major poll title.
Posted on 8/28/24 at 8:12 pm to Dr Rosenrosen
Why is it prestigious? Because it’s old?
The “poll era” for national titles was from 1936-1997. When the conferences got together in 1998 and agreed to decide a champion on the field the polls stoped being selectors and became part of the formula used to determine who played on that game.

USC had the best loss of the three teams. Period. Full stop.
This is by far the shittiest argument known to man. Not even arguing this specific year.
Who did you beat? If records are equal, the wins should matter WAY more than the losses.

Can you explain what this means exactly?
Leinart, Bush, Lendale White, Mike Williams all better than any skill guys that LSU team had

They were just the media darling. The year before, the media was banging the drum for them and saying there should be a playoff because even though they had 2 losses they were ‘hot’ and ‘wouldda won it all’
They were so mad after ‘03 they changed the BCS rule that a team that was #1 in both polls was guaranteed a spot regardless of computers. Then a few years later they were mad that humans had influence over the ‘unbiased’ computers. The arguments and narratives changed and contradicted every year depending on the new gripe. Just wait til someone like USC ends up #13, 1 spot out of the playoff, they’ll want to expand the playoff further

Undefeated in regulation, or does that only count for 2007?

We doing defense too or nah

Michael Clayton and devery Henderson were both better than Mike Williams.
The LSU O line was dominant.
And that defense was going to shut down USC and destroy a still young Leinart and bush. That d line and secondary were ridiculous.
Usc had the star power but the trenches would have been owned by LSU and that star power was all young

I’m glad you brought this up because more LSU starters from that team played in the NFL than did USC.

USC had dudes there too… our perception is clouded because we had the future GOAT coach
After that USC run ended, the SEC started dominating and hasn’t really stopped

Muh round robin.

I can say that it is true that they were ranked Number 1 in both the AP and the Coaches Poll prior to the BCS Championship game. They did get swindled out of a BCS championship spot by OK.

And they bring up lendale white and reggie bush yet the leading rusher was a freshman Justin Vincent.
It doesn’t matter what they each did in 2005. It matters what they were in 2003

I think its a safe bet that LSU fans will be insufferable this weekend in Vegas, and not because of the game that is being played this weekend, but because of something that occurred now more than 21 years ago.

They did, but it isn't really clouded. LSU had a better SOS and still maintained the #1 defense. Doesn't really matter if it was "the future GOAT" or Les Miles coaching. Tougher schedule. #1 defense. They then shut down a better offense that had played a higher SOS than USC.
Again, there is an argument USC got screwed and OU didn't deserve their spot in the title game. You could also argue OU had to play an extra game. It doesn't change the fact that, within the parameters of the season, LSU won the championship game. Pete Carroll "feeling like he won a national championship" doesn't make it so. LSU did win one.

Hey give us some credit.
We are going to be insufferable for a lot more than just that.
