The real story of the pirate vs the craig james family.
Mike Leach put the truth in his book ‘Swing Your Sword’, including all the legal depositions of everyone involved. The Dallas Morning News requested all of the depositions as public records because Leach is/was a state employee.
The book and documents confirm Craig James fabricated the entire story about his son in concert with ESPN and Texas Tech university officials. Every bit of their collusion is readily available, which is why ESPN doesn’t bring it up and James doesn’t work there anymore. Leach sued Tech and was vindicated in his claim for wrongful termination by the Texas Supreme Court but allowed the university to claim sovereign immunity to avoid paying Leach. Leach sued ESPN for defamation for $25M and James was quietly fired so they probably won’t be making a documentary about it.
Leach even writes about how he and his team their created the ‘Craig James Killed 5 Hookers’ claim as an example of how easy it is to start a lie about someone in the modern media age. (How can one say Craig James didn’t kill 5 hookers?)
However, the 30 for 30 on the Duke lacrosse fiasco conveniently left out ESPN’s role in creating and reporting that fake story, so I could be wrong and maybe they’ll leave out how they worked with Tech’s leadership to ruin Leach. It is more likely they’ll be out of business & subscribers because of their own leadership ruining the network long before any documentary gets made.

Lawrence Phillips. He was incredibly talented but was always in trouble. Ended up in prison, killed his cellmate then committed suicide. I'd like to see his life investigated.

Some of these don’t meet the “30 for 30” criteria. It has to take place during the ESPN era (1980-present).

I always wished instead of that terrible U part 2, they would have done one on the state of Florida in the 90's. Bowden, Spurrier, Wide Right 1 and 2...
That's where I thought the "The U" doc was misguided and myopic.
They made it out to be this rags-to-riches phenomenon that was unique to Miami in the 1980s, but in actuality it happened at both Florida State and Florida around the same time.
Florida State was an afterthought before Bowden got there, and Florida wasn't a powerhouse until Spurrier was hired at the turn of the decade.

I think they abandoned that criteria with the original 30 for 30.

I don’t like Miami, but their entire program became iconic and Florida and FSU never did. Miami became known as a unique brand of football and athlete that really did polarize college football.

I think the only one that abandoned the format was that stupid, predictable “member that one time in history the Knicks were good?” Doc.

It’s widely known, but I’ve always thought the way Dale Brown showed up in B. R. and resurrected basketball at LSU by driving around the State was a great story.
