Now we are seeing teams like Florida and LSU, long known for having great defenses, start to morph into big 12 squads?

Bama starting to look that way too

Why is this happening?

Georgia and Clemson and ND are the exception

The spread offense happened.
Also, targeting penalty to a lesser extent.

Florida was inevitable with Dan Mullen taking the helm.

LSU is a worn out discussion.

Bama struggling so much on D is the million dollar question.

less practice and live contact tackling leading up to season

no easy warm up games to correct mistakes, thrown right into fire

New players learning the Defense for LSU.
Mond/TAMU had nothing to lose and a ‘raucous’ home crowd.
Bama, no idea
Nobody else played defense before tbf.

I chalk it to not enough practice time

The spread offense has been around since 2005 yet defenses were still elite well into the 2010s

Great defenses are a rarity now. That goes for both the NFL and CFB.

We have a defense bitch. You’ll see it first hand when we play.

Not necessarily a "cream rises to the top" situation, but I would wager that the most talented kids end up playing offense when they're young and that is rearing its head in college

good teams are running advanced offenses now

how many Ds stopped UT in 2005? UF in 2007/2008?

a really underrated reason for this is that offensive coaching/development has gotten light year's better. it's not JUST the schemes

Perhaps the way the game is being called is having an impact. Targeting penalties and stiff DPI calls mean that secondaries pretty much can't muck up the game if they're facing speedy WRs.

When you can't touch anyone, the game turns into 7-on-7. This HEAVILY favors the offense.

I think we'll come to a day where teams stop running the ball as well, since defenses ARE able to fight back against a running team.

Same as NFL. If you touch a QB or WR you get penalized.
