Put these two factors together, and you have a recipe for hitting .220.

1. Pitchers have insane stuff and they don’t pace themselves anymore, that’s why you had so many complete games in the past, pitchers didn’t treat every pitch in every inning as a “game moment” and the single most important pitch of a game. Now they run a jillion pitchers out there because they want maximum gas and movement on every pitch of the game, first through last innings.

2. People obsess over launch angles because it sounds so mysterious and high faultin’, I guarantee you when Mickey Mantle cranked one it was with a hellacious launch angle.

Basically, analytics say it’s more efficient as far as scoring runs to have a power offense rather than play small ball. Whether it’s entertaining or not to the fans … and it often isn’t … or whether it produces the historical metric of .300 hitters is of no concern to teams, they’re going to do what the numbers tell them gives them the highest mathematical probability of a successful outcome today.

Hitters are also being told that strikeouts are just another out. Mantle struck out a ton but he also probably had the second greatest batting eye in history behind Ted Williams and had a hellacious on base percentage so it evened out and made him a stupendously productive offensive player. Riley Greene of Detroit led the AL with 201 strikeouts and had a sizzling .313 OBP, he hit a bunch of homers and had a bunch of RBIs, but a third of the time he was useless.

Nerds and spreadsheet cucks took over the sport. The game was better when they helped did the math on contracts and did Elias Sports Bureau stuff and that was it.

They need to not allow more than 10 pitchers on an active roster.

Starting pitcher must go at least 6 innings if he hasn't given up 5 runs or more -- or -- injured (must go on 10 day dl).

That would be enough to restore the game properly.

Someone ask the Astros organization because in 43 of their losses this year they scored 2 runs or less, yet nobody has had to answer for this. Not a soul has been fired.

Although I quite wouldn't word it like you did, you're not wrong.

Focus is on a power offense scoring with HRs instead of scoring runs playing small ball and stringing hits together.

The irony is the Milwaukee Brewers had the best record in baseball and they win by playing small ball and pitching for the most part.

I also think MLB should address this by looking at roster construction and limiting the number of pitchers that can be carried on a roster. That way these guys would have to actually pitch and stretch out innings instead of rolling one guy after another out there throwing straight gas and blowing their arms out. This would also help protect the pitchers from injury.

The problem is it’s the teams who are doing what’s being done with pitching today, and the commissioner works for the teams. He will get severe blowback if he tries to mandate pitching uses just because fans want complete games, the teams will say it’s not our job to entertain the fans, it’s our job to win and fans should prioritize winning not being entertained or having baseball be like it was in the 1970s.

There’s a middle ground somewhere, perhaps they will find it.
