The Sacramento Kings, Trailblazers & Pistons have more numbers retired than the Lakers as well. The Lakers are very selective .

Not even George Mikans number is retired nor HOF/ ex League MVP Bob McAdoo ( who won 2 rings as a Lakers role player).

Ya i didn’t realize those guys weren’t in the hall
I guess I’m blinded by it because they just all won a couple titles with them

I'm not really arguing that they weren't/aren't deserving.

Though in a thread about running out of numbers, your criteria for retirement better be pretty high. For the Red Sox it used to be ridiculous:

1) In the HoF
2) Finished career in Boston
3) 10 years in Boston

That's still the general requirements, though they've made exceptions.

But you don’t think they should have retired any of those?
Outside of Maris really, i think that’s fine with all those other guys

Bernie and Mattingly deserved to have their numbers retired. The others do not in my opinion. Jersey retirements should be exclusively for HOF caliber players outside of a few exceptions.

They can start using irrational and imaginary numbers and such.

Substituting numbers for names by way of explanation:

"Pi inbounds the ball to the Square Root of Two, who lobs it to 23i for the tomahawk dunk."

Wait until the Warriors retire the number of everyone who played on their 3 recent championship teams.

Pretty sure NBA numbers don’t go past 55

You're thinking of college basketball - no digit can be higher than 5. This is to make it easier for a ref to signal a foul...only five fingers per hand

No number limits in the NBA

Realistically they'll unretire numbers at one point.
this... For example if the Lakers have Mikan retired... Nobody in 2150 will know who he is. There's a lot of other questionable number retirements too, not just old ones... Nick Collison by the Thunder comes to mind, but it will be ironic if his number stays retired and the Thunder never retire any of Durant, Harden, or Westbrook, all MVPs who played for them

I feel like the Yankees would be a better team for this question. They've already retired about twice as many numbers as the Lakers. They'll retire anyone's number.

My first thought, too.

The Yankees literally don't have an unretired single digit number left, save for 0 which Ottavino dusted off this year.

I'm a lifelong Yanks fan, but there are a few numbers I'd argue that shouldn't be retired.

You would be correct for high school and college basketball, but not for NBA.

In college and HS, there are no digits above 5, so no 6-9, 16-19, etc. In the NBA, there is no such rule, hence examples like James 6, Maravich 7, Bryant 8, etc.

I actually think in the NBA when a player wears those numbers
They have to pay a fee.

It could be just a myth that was told to me by some baw on here
That when a guy changes his number to a number like say 77 or 8
He has to pay a small fee

The real question is, what about a college basketball team? Like, look at a program like Duke. They have retired a ton of numbers, and in college basketball you aren’t allowed to have any numbers that exceed the number of fingers on each hand.
