What happens when, one day, a team like the Lakers retires all Jersey numbers?

Do they go to letters? Symbols?

Like one day in 2142, the Lakers are going to have a superstar nicknamed Steaksauce because his Jersey “number” is A1

I feel like they didn’t think this through.

Pre-workout just crossed Plastic-explosive over. WOW. Broken ankles

More creative i think

I feel like the Yankees would be a better team for this question. They've already retired about twice as many numbers as the Lakers. They'll retire anyone's number.

Pretty sure NBA numbers don’t go past 55

I think the Bears declared they were done retiring numbers after Ditka's was retired. I guess they could just do that.

Rodman wore 91 with the Bulls. Can't speak to anyone else specifically, but I don't believe it's true.

Not that, they’ve just had a ton of Hall of Famers
They’ve retired every single digit
Every single digit number player is in the hall of fame (or about to be- Jeter)

They've retired the jerseys of Billy Martin, Roger Maris, Thurman Munson, Jorge Posada, Don Mattingly, Elston Howard, Andy Pettite, Ron Guidry, and Bernie Williams all of whom aren't HOFers.

Realistically they'll unretire numbers at one point.

But you don’t think they should have retired any of those?
Outside of Maris really, i think that’s fine with all those other guys

The point is that half of people with their numbers retired aren't (or won't be) in the HoF.

They have a fairly lax policy on retiring numbers. The Red Sox, on the other hand, have had a really strict policy that they've only recently started moving away from.

Ya i didn’t realize those guys weren’t in the hall
I guess I’m blinded by it because they just all won a couple titles with them

Can’t really argue Williams Posada and Pettite who spent many years and won multiple rings as the faces of their franchise.

Elston Howard was their first black player

Martin a manager and player and won titles

Munson died in the middle of a season, understand that one

Maris outside of 61 was a dud

Don’t know much about Guidry
