Dabo never makes his run if Tennessee recruits Lawrence and Ross. Thanks Butch

They had back to back generational talents at qb along with the best defensive coach in the country. They don’t have any of those three people anymore.

The downfall of most good teams, A string of quarterback busts. Then couple that with Dabo refusing to adapt to NIL and the portal.

There's also generally going to be some mean reversion over time.

what explains this drastic drop off in performance? they were still recruiting at a high level and still have Dabo

Nothing has happened to them, they're the exact same team they've been for the entirely of dabo's tenure which can be quite clearly broken off into 2 sections.

1- When they have an elite, all-world, "generational", 1st overall draft pick at QB- they are 67-5 (93%) with 2 national titles.

2- When they do not have the person listed above, they are 90-32 (74%) with 0 national titles and only 1 single top 5 finish in 9 years. This isn't counting dabo's interim tenure.

It's pretty simple and I'm not sure why poeple don't see it. Take away deshaun and trevor and dabo isn't even mark richt. Now granted, you can't actually "take away" those guys IRL and they did actually happen, so give credit where it's due for landing those guys. My point is simply that without a transcendent NFL caliber player at QB that's the best player on the field every game, he's barely above average especially considering the dogshit conference he's coached in.

Kirby got to UGA and started taking the talent they were getting.

Their D Line last year was the last of the super high level recruiting.

Florida St and a Miami road trip on the horizon looking a little threatening. We need ticket prices to come down for that ND game so this could help.

Their WR and DL talent seems to have dropped off big time from their prime years. There was a stretch there where it seemed like Clemson had 2 DL drafted in the 1st round every year.

They were built almost like an SEC team but in the ACC. I still like Klubnik but it didn't seem like his WR were getting a whole hell of a lot of separation

Building on this, has any team actually won a title without key contributors of that caliber?

Why do people keep saying this? Kirby can only recruit 25 or so players every class. There's plenty of talent out there, especially in the south. Dabo's struggling with replacing coordinators, and he's refusing to adapt to this era of CFB. Those are his issues

I mean...every national title winner has massively talented dudes with NFL talent that make big plays. That wasn't really my point.

Because Georgia was down and Clemson was up in recruiting. Clemson and Bama dominated that region for elite talent. With Georgia now taking Clemson's place, Clemson is still recruiting well but not elite like they were. There is still only so much elite talent available. Even Bama is falling off a little bit because of the Kirby effect.

I don't really agree with this. STrangely enough, clemson has never (even going back ~10 years) recruited at an elite level OTHER than DL and QB. Even in years when they were making the title game every year they had some head scractching recruiting classes, btu they were covered up based on elite QB play and a woefully pathetic schedule.

Now they aren't gettign the deshaun/trevors of the world anymore, the ACC is very slowly starting to improve, and as you mention, UGA improving does have some part of it. But I don't think kirby recruiting elitely is a primary reason for clemson's downfall. I think they've simply returned to the mean.

I get it, that was more directed at the naysayers that “well they had so-and-so which is the only reason they won”

Clemson went on a run when the league was average. Now teams are getting better (Duke, FSU, etc). Their run of dominance in a subpar conference is over.
