Culture is what seperates him

A lot of truth here. The great coaches I played for made it seem like “it never stops” is normal. It was sickening, and then we began to win everything.

He knew where he would get the best of everything he was gonna want. Bama has given him everything he has wanted. The results reflect that. However his is best at making 3 star players look like 5 star players.

He cares more about doing what it takes to be a championship team, than winning the national championship.

Saban has spent a lifetime learning from his mistakes.
He is a very process oriented person. He looks at data to make decisions.
For instance, he has criteria for every position on the field as far as recruiting goes. He sticks with his metrics.
He understands that things change in the game and he has made changes to put his teams in position to succeed.
He leaves nothing to chance. Every aspect of his program is based on best practices. It is not accidental, it’s purposeful.
Other coaches try stuff. Some of it works. He looks for the best practice and implements it at a top shelf level.

A lot of $100 handshakes with recruits. Help from boosters, businesses around Alabama. All that money they gave those kids in his first 5 years or so built this program. He's not that great of a coach. Take away that talent and see what kind of coach he is or just see how well it went at the Dolphins.

You can literally say that about any highly successful coach. Who’s winning championships with marginal talent?

I’ve always hated this answer. I worked in an SEC football office, and those guys worked every waking second of the day.
What does it mean for Saban to outwork someone?

On top of being a great coach he has:
1) Pretty much an entire network that promotes his brand daily, all season long, all off season long, and while other teams in other conferences are playing.
2) Gets the best players coming out of HS every year to the point that the gap between the top recruiting team (Bama) and the second best team have the same gap as 2-20. Basically, his second team can beat a lot of first teams.
3) His brand is represented well at all levels of the SEC, so he gets a LOT of favorable scheduling, officiating, etc
4) MULLIGANS: The entire CFB landscape will completely alter itself if Bama is in a rare situation where they may not make the finals. See 2011. After losing the GOTC, Bama gets a mulligan, and CFB promptly drops the slogan "Every Game Counts". Saban would win a title this way, and then get another mulligan a few years later beating another SEC school in the title game (UGA) after finishing third in the conference.

Recruiting, convincing 5 stars to continue to sign even though they may not play right away
PED's
Process and getting players to respect the process
One of first schools to add analysts
In game adjustments and making assistants accountable

Yeah he has the best talent, but what truly separates him to me is the discipline and team focus he instills in his players. The discipline to stick to fundamentals, carry out one’s assignment, and not hurt your team by dumb lapses in judgment.

It seems to me that he has gotten so much better over the years.
Initially, he wanted to win w/ defense and not lose the game on offense --until 2011. After that his offense has been awesome.
Also, 99% of coaches lose that title game vs Georgia.
The only (college) coaching I've seen that seems to come close was Skip in baseball . Skip took a losing program and turned it into the powerhouse. Saban woke a giant, then fed it roids.

A lot of good answers in here, but what it really comes down to is intelligence.
The man is just incredibly smart. He could have done anything and been ridiculously successful. There was that article I think last year where the guy asked, "Are we wasting Nick Saban on football?" It was pretty intriguing. He could have been outstanding as a policy maker, doctor, whatever. He's probably a genius. And to me, what make a genius is the ability to relate complex information and concepts to everyday people, and that's what he does with his football players.
We like to make jokes about his "process", but it's really what sets him apart. Don't focus on the end goal. Focus on doing the task right in front of you to perfection, and the success will follow. He gets his players to buy-in to that mentality, so they always come out extremely prepared.

He did pretty damn well at Michigan State considering he took over a program under NCAA sanctions.

Without fail. It frustrates me sometimes when it comes to in-state talent he passes on. But ultimately how can you question the results?

Now give Saban the roster @ Illinois or Nebraska….think he’s winning 3/4 National Championships on coaching alone?
He won a National title year three at Alabama with predominantly Shula guys in the starting lineup. Which means he can develop like no one else too.

And for him, that started out with doing things "Big Nick's way" when he was a youngster and a teenager.
