would own college football ? I'm going with Barry Switzer. Dude was a cheat code in the 70's. I think he kills it with today's NIL rules.

Ha, he and Barry worked the "under table NIL" better than anyone until Saban hit his stride.

Bear Bryant was a cheating SOB, so he would be comfortable with the process.

Barry Switzer would be putting out hits on people in the NIL era

To hell with narrowing it to one coach. Give me the entire Southwest Conference circa 1979.

Jimmy Johnson would never lose.

That would be some bizarro world party.
Uncontrolled chaos.
It would be lifestyle over football, fame before you've made it to a Hollywood level.

...or until he was in his 70s.

The only coaches among the ones listed in this thread that would succeed would be Jimmy Johnson and Pete Carroll. Both of them let their players have freedom. The rest, Saban, Bryant and others functioned because they were always in control. They could have never handled the players having the power.

This is what I think. Has to be cheaters who succeeded at both levels. Saban failed in the NFL and NIL/portal shifted power to the players. It isn't as simple as he couldn't cut it, but he certainly didn't enjoy dealing with players having options.
Maybe Switzer too.

I agree that a Switzer, Johnson, and Carroll would do great. Spurrier and Bowden would do pretty well as well. NIL is really not much different than the bagman system. The difference in the era’s is the portal. Without the portal the coaches have the power because who wants to sit out a year today. The portal is what gives the players the power to leave immediately to the highest bidder.
Coaches like Saban and Kirby won due to overwhelming talent thanks to the bagman system that allowed them to buy up players. They can’t do that now which is why Saban retired and Kirby is just now a top ten program instead of a Final 2 type.
