I love the short game.... I could practice chips, pitches, and greenside bunker shots all day.

Same. Everytime I go to the range I'm the only one in the bunker practicing. I'm not great in the short game but I acknowledge how fun it is to scramble successfully.

What's the fun of 3-putting and double chipping? It's worse than missing a fairway or derping a 7-iron, IMO.

Yea, I know there are a lot of factors to consider. But there is one club you grab more than others for a standard chip shot.

56 or 52. if its uphill and tight lie I may use a 9 iron or PW...if the lie is fluffy enough I may do a mini flop with a 60

I'm good at chipping within 50 yds of green with 8 iron...but I will use other clubs if need be... 8 iron 97% of time around green

50 yards out is not really a "chip"

As with every shot in golf, depends.

This
I prefer a bump and run any time the situation allows it. That obviously changes when you have to carry a bunker, don't have much green to work with, etc.

I was discussing that with my partner last week. We decided that any shot where your backswing does not go over the level of your head is a chip. At 50 yards my club does not go over my head...so it's a chip for me. Arbitrary distinction? Yep.

Chipping is any swing that doesn't take the club past level with the deck?

We should debate this.

I would agree with this.

I would call a 50 yard or so shot a pitch.

ETA: Actually I'd call a 50 yard shot a 3/4 60* most times , but I don't hit particularly long.

I feel like 50 yards out is a pitch rather than a chip.

Zach, I can take a backswing that wont go over the level of my head and hit it 150 yards. God only knows how far Ryno can hit it. I don't think that's an accurate guage of what a chip is

Definition: A "chip shot" in golf is a shot played from close to the green, usually within a few yards of the putting surface, that results in the ball popping into the air, then hitting the ground and rolling forward.

quote:

Definition: A "pitch shot" (or just "pitch") is a shot played with a highly lofted club that is designed to go a relatively short distance with a steep ascent and steep descent. Pitch shots are played into the green, typically from 40-50 yards and closer.
