Because cards are only worth what someone is willing to pay for them. Everyone who wants a Griffey RC, has a card by now.
I bought that card on Amazon a couple months ago.

when i was like 9-11, I LOVED collecting cards and I didnt really care about how much they were worth
I remember I had a jordan baseball card and some dude wanted to give me $50 for it and I told him to GTFO
But I did love getting the new Becketts and looking up all my cards

This is the issue.
I'd like to buy Evan Longoria's Rookie Card. Great.... here's his 2008 Topps card.
See, even has a nice little logo on it to tell you it's his rookie card. Beckett will identify it as his RC.
The problem?
In 2006, Bowman released his card (in packs just like the other cards), that shows him in a Rays uniform. This is his first "regular issue" card, but not his "Rookie Card."
Just for kicks, there's also a 2007 Bowman Longoria, which came out after his "real" Rookie Card and before his "recognized" rookie card.
Ignorance of the highest order.

So I have to be honest. I have all of the Bo Jackson cards and all this talk has me confused as to which one is considered his rookie card. Can someone post which one it's supposed to be? I know I have it but I want to properly label it.

1986 Topps Traded "Tiffany" (the super glossy version) is probably the answer.

Everyone who collected cards are either dead or old so.

Yeah I have two of those. I also have a few of the ones where he is in an Auburn uniform as well and one that actually has rookie all stars or something like that. I'm going to pull them all when I get home.

As a kid I got tired of every set having multiple subsets of chase cards which could only be found in one or two packs per box. The regular cards were worth nothing. Plus I was getting to the point where I got bored with them. I picked up comics for a while, at least I could read those and then later I got into Magic cards which had both the thrill of collecting plus it was a game so the cards had some function other than to look at.

With the 5,000 different series coming out - now they have all different cards. The regular old card is worthless now - it's all about patches and auto's. Different color patches = more value than a solid patch.
I still will drop some cash on a good player, but nothing like I use to. Back in my heyday I'd spend all day trolling sportscardforum looking for trades.

You probably should.

The little casing around that Bo Jackson card, with the grade on it, that's what ruined sports cards. The grading companies weren't standardized or consistent. Me and my friend took the same card to the same grading service at a "Tuff Stuff" show 3 times and each time it was given a different grade. Also took the same card to another grading service at the national card show and it was graded differently twice. Could not trust the grades the cards were given but yet the 10s and pristine cards were valued astronomically. Grading also spoiled people and devalued the basic card with no grade.
The market boomed with inserts and chase cards, so that can't be used as an excuse as to why the market crashed. The overflooding of the market is valid along with the insane increase in price of the packs, boxes and cases. The costs went astronomical in a short time.
Inserts always lost value over time and they were what turned the industry into a seller's market instead of a buyers market. The prices of the inserts started out so high that you'd have to sell them quickly to justify some of the costs it took to get them. Once the value of the insert dropped, you were losing money(on average).
I only collected(still do) the rookie cards but even they have begun to lose value. Anyone that remembers the Kobe, Duncan, McGrady etc Topps Chrome rookies and the huge value they went to quickly and look at the values now, understand. Those cards were insanely high in value. Even the Jordan rookies have dropped significantly. I keep them for my own love and don't really care for the overall value, though if not for pulling from packs, I'd be down a shitload of money. I'm so happy I never paid the value prices for the top rookies I have. The Jordan packs were insanely high though but I got 2 from a a 15 pack buy, so I made out.

So do the older card still hold there value? My dad has every card from 61-64 and i think half of 65 with 4 or 5 copies of many of the cards When i was like 10-12 i orginaized them and books and looked up all their values are they close to that still?

I would guess that anything before 1987 is still worth some money with those 60s cards worth a lot of money.

Not really. I have a Joe Montana and Jerry Rice rookie that have both devalued greatly over the past 5-10 years. The worst part is as low as the Beckett value has gotten you would still be very lucky to even get half of what it's "worth".
