It's dumb that you don't have to take it back on an air ball. It's still a change of possession. (Half court game).

I will do this if the game is a bunch of 6-foot tall white dudes who can shoot and dribble a little bit, but that's it.
If it's a game with people that are really good and can school my arse, then I just try to play within the flow of the game.

i used to do it when i was guarding a shooter and if he'd get free off a screen and i'd be a step late i'd run/jump to try and affect the shot then haul arse down court while he landed and watched to see if it went in

2 things I hate. 1) getting mugged time after time after you burn your defender bc all you do is check the ball up top.
2) even though I'd never call 3 secs it does get old when you're guarding post for 20secs with the dude just camped out in the lane.

Where is this the norm? I've never played a pick-up game where calling a foul as you shoot results in no shot. But then again, I'm an old fart who stopped playing pick-up ball a couple of years ago. Can't find decent runs in Baton Rouge (at least, not a decent old man run).
When a stopped playing, everybody was yelling "and one!" when they were fouled as they shot. If they made it, nobody worried about the foul. Bucket and play on.
And I don't recall backcourt not being called too. I do remember one of those annoying 10 minute "Y" arguments because a guy threw the ball in the backcourt and when the defense called it, he claimed he had called "check ball" -- which is a dumb pick-up rule.
