Using the final regular season CFB Playoff Rankings and and the format 5 Power 5 Champions, 2 At-large, and highest ranked Group of 5 Champion, here is what your 8 team playoff would've looked like each season since 2014.

Asterisk* represents the At-large bid
(Parentheses represents the highest ranked Group of 5)

I also included any 2 loss or better Power 5 schools that would've had been in discussion or included based on the parameters of an 8 team tournament.

2014
(#20 Boise State 10-2) at #1 Alabama 12-1
#5 Baylor* 11-1 at #4 Ohio State 12-1
#6 TCU 11-1 at #3 Florida State 13-0
#7 Mississippi State* 10-2 at #2 Oregon 12-1

Left Out
#8 Michigan State 10-2

2015
(#18 Houston 12-1) at #1 Clemson 13-0
#5 Iowa* 12-1 at #4 Oklahoma 11-1
#6 Stanford 11-2 at #3 Michigan State 12-1
#7 Ohio State* 11-1 at #2 Alabama 12-1

Left Out
#8 Notre Dame 10-2, #9 Florida State 10-2, #10 North Carolina 11-2, #11 TCU 10-2

2016
(#15 Western Michigan 13-0) at #1 Alabama 13-0
#5 Penn State 11-2 at #4 Washington 12-1
#7 Oklahoma 10-2 at #3 Ohio State* 11-1
#6 Michigan* 10-2 at #2 Clemson 12-1

(Oklahoma and Michigan both finished 10-2, I'm using assumption they wouldve swapped their "ranking" in order to avoid the Michigan OSU rematch in R1.

Left Out
#8 Wisconsin 10-3

2017
(#12 UCF 13-0) at #1 Clemson 12-1
#5 Ohio State 11-2 at #4 Alabama* 11-1
#6 Wisconsin* 12-1 at #3 Georgia 12-1
#8 USC 11-2 at #2 Oklahoma 12-1

Left Out
#7 Auburn 10-3, #9 Penn State 10-2, #10 Miami 10-2, #11 Washington 10-2

2018
#9 Washington 10-3 at #1 Alabama 13-0
#5 Georgia* 11-2 at #4 Oklahoma 12-1
#6 Ohio State 12-1 at #3 Notre Dame* 13-0
(#8 UCF 13-0) at #2 Clemson 13-0

Left Out
#7 Michigan 10-2

If after 13 games you're ranked 8th, you dont' deserve to be national champion.

12 teams make the NFL playoffs. Now, think about what you just said...

If you get beat by #8, you don't deserve to be national champion

My biggest problem with 8 (other than I don’t think 8 teams have a valid argument). Is teams that lose CCG would be out while teams that don’t play get in. 2014 for example you Miss St in and Mich St out, both didn’t play in the CCG, but Arizona, who was 10-2 and had probably the best win that year, at Oregon,! had to play Oregon again and lost, without hat loss they have a really strong argument to be in.

Same last year with Auburn

Do you say that about every sport?

Because literally every other sport does it that way. What makes FBS college football so special?

As I’ve said and will always say, the regular season is the playoffs. If you’re a P5 team and win all your games, you advance. If you lose a game, you may be awarded a get out of jail free card, but if you don’t that’s on you.

What about non P5 teams? If they aren't rewarded for winning all their games why even include them in the FBS?

They need a better strength of schedule. If they have a decently strong schedule and win all their games then they will get in. A few years ago Houston would have had a good enough SOS but they didn’t handle business.

NFL format is a terrible way to judge a champion

Teams with losing records in the playoffs. LMAO

I don't agree. It takes away subjectivity. If a team is 7-9, like Seattle was stunning the Saints, then you know what, the road is hard. Those rarely happen, though.

Personally, I would like to expand the NCAA playoff, but there should be a reward given for the Top 4. Saying a 12-team playoff, but the Top 4 have a bye. Play the first two rounds as HOME GAMES of the schools and the Final Four are neutral.

One of the Giants recent Super Bowls they were 7-7, played 2 other .500 teams the last 2 games and won the title, that’s way worse than a 2 loss Michigan not getting another shot

Moving to 8 would destroy the impact of big games late in the regular season. Just this year the OSU-Michigan game and the UGA-Bama game become almost meaningless. I don’t want that.

I'd put Michigan in over Washington.

It would look awesome regardless.. and conference championships would really mean something.

Would keep everyone invested in college football that much more.

I believe it would allow the NCAA teams to play better football. I feel like we don't get a true champion sometimes because top teams often play so close to the vest and have the "don't lose it" mentality. Going into games knowing you can make mistakes, lose, and be alright would open us up to better, more agresive games.

Yes it's a truly awful format favored by simple thinkers

(A lot of NFL fans to be blunt)
