The superstar approach to the dunk contest of it’s better to not compete than potentially lose has seeped into the league as a whole.

Nailed it.

at the end of the day why does anybody give this many shits about the all start game?

YEAH! The players should protest the fans wanting a better product by not playing defense or even crossing half court during the game. Maybe take some silly half court globetrotter shots.

That will show them.

Thing about hockey is you can’t really half arse it out there on the ice. You can definitely half arse and loaf around in basketball. You loaf around in hockey, you get your head taken off

If you did USA vs World you’d get these NBA losers actually playing.

They still wouldn’t give up their all star rest to go balls out. The international competition is much more ingrained in hockey from the Junior tournaments etc.

There is no fix for the NBA all-star game because the players don't care and never will. The format was perfectly fine for years in the NBA when you had guys that actually cared. They haven't for years now and there's no going back. It's not the format that's the issue, it's the players.

It will take a mentality shift to fix it.

It starts from the top, and as long as the Commissioner's office is cool with it, it won't change. The NBA and its' media has to start by ending the hyperfocus on superstars.

the olympics in basketball this past summer was compelling
maybe do something like that if you have enough interest

same thing with baseball, have a similar world baseball classic type event

The NBA would have to do black vs white to garner the same level of interest, but it would set race relations back decades in the USA.

Nah. They still wouldnt take it seriously imo

This. You can have the best formats in the world and if the players don’t care, like the NBA players clearly don’t, it will still suck.
