What's the effect of a shaft that may be to stiff and too heavy

usually when a shaft is too stiff you will not achieve the bending or kick of the shaft. You will not be able to create enough lag for the shaft. It would also be difficult to return the club face to square at impact. Misses will likely be low and right.

A really good piece I read the other day. Hope this shines light on a few things

In professional fitting, whenever a good clubfitter hears a golfer say things as you did about a "two-way miss" or struggles with timing, or getting too fast with elements of the swing, what the golfer is really telling the clubfitter is that something about either the length or the total weight or the headweight feel of the club is not properly matched to the golfer's inherent or learned sense of swing tempo, transition, timing, or rhythm.

The WEIGHT of the shaft can certainly be one of the possible causes and one of the possible ways to help reduce these tendencies. But rarely would the flex or tip trimming have anything to do with this. The only way that shaft stiffness issues get into this is if the golfer perceives that either the shaft FEELS as if it is too stiff or too flexible so they change their swing tempo or transition force to try to make the shaft's bending feel be more in terms of what the golfer wants to feel.

But your single comment of missing two ways really is a telling factor that says more than likely your natural sense of swing aggressiveness either needs a heavier shaft weight and a heavier headweight feel, with possibly maybe a little shorter driver length to go with them. And in all such cases it is always, always best to try to go TOO HEAVY in the beginning so you have a much better chance to feel and see the effects of a SIGNIFICANT increase in the overall weight AND the headweight, from which you then can dial it back a little to find that just right combination of total weight + swingweight.

Do remember this please. Strong, aggressive swingers have a tendency to want to keep swinging with the same level of aggressiveness regardless what weighting they have in their clubs. So it is very possible for a strong aggressive swinger to keep pouring on the coals with a heavier club and continue to have some problems like you have. That is a reason to go too heavy to start with so you really can FEEL how the heavier weight can help you gain some control, from which you then dial it back a little.

Golfers who miss it both ways have a problem controlling the club during the swing. Going heavy gives you the chance to feel what a heavier overall weight and heavier headweight can do to allow you to then gain more control in your swing by giving you a little more "resistance" to key your tempo from when you start the club down.

But in tipping the shaft, that's not really the solution to helping you with the issues you are reporting. Tipping a shaft is done when the golfer just senses that the shaft is a little too flexible for his preference of bending feel. Such as when you lean on a shot a little more and you feel the shaft bend a little more than what you are comfortable with feeling.

I paid double/triple for a pair of golf shoes that I wear maybe 30 times a year than what I pay for the tennis shoes I wear everyday. Golf is stupid

I bought some cheap ones that lasted a while. They would probably still be kicking if my buddy didn't leave them out in the rain for a week at his house.

I wear Brooks Ghost 5's at the hospital daily. Yeah they're 135 or so at Dick's but I only paid 55 on Ebay brand new in the box. Meanwhile I bought the TW 2013 Master's edition shoes for this year. Damn near FOUR times what I paid for my everyday shoes. Indeed...Stupid
